Jonesey! You are just like my OH.....forever comparing new prices with old prices and look very scandalised whilst he does it! :-D

'course cavement ate meat Gins......probably raw at times and certainly most of it.....tongue included. What do you think they used their spears for, killing wild grasses??? Those near the sea would have hunted for fish.

If I had to kill to eat....then I probably would do so - especially for my family's sake.

Anyway.......if you're so healthy minded, how come you smoke and drink and have more 'poorly' days than me........even at my advanced age!!! :-P

Going out for lunch now.......braised steak here I come....... :-D :-D

"I thought everyone had heard about corned beef in a can! Didn't they use it on expeditions long, long ago? Jonesey would know I think."

I resemble that remark! ;-)

As it happens I quite like corned beef and like Dea, I enjoy it in a sandwich with pickled red cabbage. The taste probably stems from the post war rationing period when you ate what was available rather than what you wanted. Remember that meat did not come off rationing until 1954. Not that my family went particularly short of anything as my grandmother kept a corner grocery shop so we tended to get first dibs on what was available.

Probably more important to the then still young Jonesey was the fact that sweet rationing did not end until 1953. On the subject of sweets have you noticed how they have rocketed in price recently. I was nosing round my local newsagents yesterday and spotted that a standard size Mars Bar now costs 55p (11 shillings in good old Christian money). If I remember correctly when I first became addicted to them they cost about 6d (Two and a half new fangled pence) each and they were a bigger bar to boot.

Oops my age is showing again. :-D

Gee Report 14 Oct 2011 09:36

Cave men very rarely ate meat...they couldnt catch it!

Thats why they we have appendix...to digest grasses and thats why we dont need them any longer :-P :-P :-P :-P :-P

Bet if you had to catch it and kill it yourself you'd eat more veg!

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 14 Oct 2011 09:16

Good job you weren't around in the war then..............pig's trotters, fried brains......all of which, I believe, were delicious but I am not in a hurry to try them.

Ox tongue is quite nice really but a bit salty.

Man has been eating meat since 'Adam was a lad'.

The farming system has been in place for nearly as long as that.

Our systems are geared up for meat eating.....our stomachs produce acid designed to cope with it.

We are omnivores and need both meat and veggies.

As with most things, it's a matter of being sensible and not over-indulging.

:-P :-P to you too!!! :-D

Excuse me whilst I splutter coffee all over the keyboard! £90 worth of bras ???????????????????????????? :-S :-S :-S :-S

Good heaven's woman! Have you more money than sense or do you need summat the size of two skips???????????

I need a lie down! Not sure I can face fried bread after that announcement but thank you anyway.

Hi Gracie, sorry about your 'incident' - why not get it checked at the doc's? You've had a lot to put up with lately and may be a bit rundown. It's amazing how much mess a bleeding nose can make isn't it?

I thought everyone had heard about corned beef in a can! Didn't they use it on expeditions long, long ago? Jonesey would know I think. ;-)

I really don't mind having corned beef now and again. You can get it sliced thinly in supermarkets.

My OH also enjoys ox-tongue in a sandwich....not the luncheon type....the proper type. That should do Gins a power of good!!

I can't fathom out beef served with white sauce to be honest.

Going to go for a shower soon......with 90 quids worth of bras floating before my eyes............

:-S

Now have to chase where my bras have gone....Fig Leaves mailed them out on 6th Oct to I emailed them yesterday to ask when I could expect them?

I should have had them they say....err no I havent, £90 worth of bras seem to have gone missing

So now I have a form to complete and have to prove Ive spoke to Royal Mail to check if they have them.....wont be ordering from them again in a hurry

Ugh minced up beef? Nope definately not what I was thinking of...

We cut it up really thinly and have it hot with usually a white sauce.

I can't remember what cut it is though, how annoying!

Yep Jax it looked awful and my girl kept saying show me, and then oh you have to go the dr mummy! Maybe my blood pressure was up or something I felt really really awful before lunch, but my head is only a dull ache now. :-)

Still gorgeous sunny weather Ginny, everyone is in short sleeves! :-D

corned beef in a tin is minced up beef

which I think is why some brands taste awful!

Sorry to hear about your bloody nose Grace :-( Did it look like you had been attacked?

Now corn beef in a tin is nothing like beef at all

It is this dry pink stuff covered with white specks which is fat.

I have heard of Brisket which I thought you use for pot roast. but it does'nt look anything like the American Brisket in these food programs I have been watching.

Infact some of the american fast type food looks nice until they smother it in bbq sauce or some such muck

Hi all,

Thanks for the clear up about the corned beef or silverside as we call it...I was meaning the cut of beef boiled in the water and served with Cabbage..although both Ginny's and Deas's recipes both sound very nice. I like the sound of the all the tasty browny bits. Yum...

I didn't actually know you could get corned beef in a can, although I should not be suprised given you can get chicken in a can (which I can't bring myself to trying!)

The page numbers don't look any bigger to me just shaded...

Had a bad morning this mroning, was dropping daughter to child care and got a blood noose while i was driving..and of course I didn't have a single tissue, so a bit of a mess. Then I forgot said daughter's hat etc etc so into work late and I have a really bad headache :-(

Ginny it is absolutely gorgeous weather here today (2 days in a row) tomorrow it is forecast for rain, so the usual! :-)
