Yes Gins same house.

This is where I spent the first 18 years of my life, until I left and came to Canada. It was the family house from the early 1800’s until the early 1980’s.

All heating and cooking was done on an open fire with the pots or griddle hanging from hooks over a peat (turf) fire, the temperature was regulated by the height of the vessel.

Every summer 1 week was set aside for cutting the peats for the next year. A back breaking job as they are saturated with water. This youtube link approximates what is involved

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DYpD7cCWuc&feature=related

Baking was accomplished by hanging a pot with a lid and placing hot embers on top of the lid.

Likewise all hot water was provided by boiling a kettle on a hook. The teapot was always kept on the hob to keep it hot (talk about strong tea)

Water was provided from a pump in the yard just outside the house and brought inside in a pail.

I remember well the day electricity was hooked up around 1950, prior to that light was provided by a Tilley lamp fuelled by paraffin (kerosene)

The radio (wireless) was powered by 2 batteries a wet cell and a dry cell, the wet had to be sent out to be periodically recharged.

My grandparents raised 4 sons and 4 daughters here.

We never had a TV but every Friday my brother and I went to a neighbours house to watch shows such as Wells Fargo and Danger Man.

Very happy times there

Hi peeps.

What's happening to this site? In the space of a year they have ground it into absolute dog sh*t..... it's terrible, unnavigable and completely useless.

I'm trying my hardest to stay loyal here, it's just too frustrating to keep trying to use it.

Roll the clock back 12 months and lets start again.

Det,

The Aussies danced around singing Waltzing Mathilda at one match several years ago.

There is a certain amount of discussion here re the Haka, but I can't see them only bringing it out now and then. ... I would have rather they have all sung Poi-E at the end of the game. One can even break dance to that (not me you understand) it is a very catchy tune. They could have had that as there Waiata at the end...
Maori weddings are great every time one gets up and makes a speech, we then have a song (Waiata) in Maori... it's a lot of fun.

Congratulations to NZ.

It was a hard fought match, and both teams played well. Great to see an opposing team reacting when the OB's were doing the Huka. Wonder if they would collapse in hysterical laughter if England did a version of a Morris Dance? There was some suspicion that the Ref was a bit quick to give Penalties against France in the Ist half.

Yes thanks Jonesey .. it was very nail biting, the French played so well they dominated possession after them fiddle darting around though the pool matches they really did save their best to last.

Pretty rare to see Graham Henry smile...

Good morning one and all.......... :-D

Thank you for working so hard Sylvs.......breakfast looks wonderful and I can't wait for that creme brulee........my favourite.......

We haven't heard from Grace for a couple of days have we? Maybe the probs with the site have deterred her from posting till things are fixed.

Apart from the usual, it should be a fairly restful day for me today. Daughter is staying at her brother's for a few days so it's just me and him.....

Hope to see you all later....~~~~

Persephone Report 23 Oct 2011 07:56

Why don't you put that on the site as well R... gives it a bit more history...

I had a nice little wander around it all...

Gosh Sylvs has got breakfast and lunch there Dea... you will be so full!!!

I made a nice tomato and ricotta sauce tonight to go on our veg... it is a pasta sauce, but it gave a nice lift to all the veges.

I shall be on here doing Rugby scores ... win or lose... so hopefully if there are lots of tries etc the thread should hit the big one in the not too distant future..

Interesting history behind the Fergie it was the actual tractor used on our farm when I was growing up ... was traded on a newer Fordson Dexta around 1961.

My cousin went to an antique vehicle auction about 3 year's ago saw it and when he saw the log book he had to buy it.
