I know all about those tectonic plates... My SIL is completing his PHD and he studies earthquakes.

Our active volcanoes that seem to muck about are in the centre of the North Island, the last eruption being in 1995 Mt Ruapehu which actually always looks peaceful to me. They say looks can be deceiving. you can pan in and out on top of it
http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/10601/..

or you can have a look at White Island which is rather a hot spot off our coast
it is on you tube

aren't you lucky?!!

we're surrounded by volcanoes ..................... and could be cut off from the rest of Canada if just one of them becomes active.

I should say "more active" ........ it already puts out steam from vents quite regularly.

Underneath us ............. we have those tectonic plates

Just had a read about your windstorm... looks very much like batten down the hatches weather.

They have just recently found four new volcanoes under South Auckland... well they can't be new really just no one seemed to know about them.. Last year we had 49 or 50 of them now we have 55... Geomarine research found them... aint science wonderful?

We now have the major windstorm .....................

trees down all over the place

people without power

ferries to Vancouver Island, and between the smaller islands, have been suspended

tanker ships are having problems keeping under way

we seem to be OK here, and obviously I still have power :-)

I did watch about 90% of the leaves on our big old cherry tree blow off over a period of 10 minutes about an hour ago :-0

R

it's interesting here

............... Feds, provincial offices, banks, liquor stores, most offices, and small retail stores are all closed.

Large grocery stores, department stores, and stores right in downtown are all open.

Some of them opened at 9 or 10 am (ie, a little later than usual), some did not open until after 11 am.

We have just been out to our local coffee shop ........... they seem to be the only place open in a 2 block stretch (both sides) of a major road .............. apart from Safeway.

and there were not many people around, or much traffic on the roads.

Par for November 11.

I don't want to think for one moment that I am more important than armistice day..
in fact it is quite poignant for me, not only did family from both sides die but my grandmother died today 12th November 1918 of the flu that was brought home on the troop ships....

But I made an important announcement several posts down and no one noticed
:-(

Here it is only holiday for Feds and banks so most were working but we had a wonderful attendance at our local Cenotaph.

Unfortunately being in charge of logistics and policing I couldn't see much of it when it happened, however as it was being broadcast live I recorded the entire ceremony and was able to watch it when I got home.

As is the tradition when the ceremony was over I, along with many, placed my poppy on a wreath, and as I did I spent a moment thinking of my great uncle Alexander Hill, mentioned before on this post who made the ultimate sacrifice in Ypres, August 16, 1917.

"We will remember them"

There was even a service at the Canadian Cenotaph on the airfield in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

This was erected there by our soldiers ............... and it will be carefully taken apart tomorrow, and shipped to Ottawa where it will be rebuilt on a suitable site.

It commemorates the 158 soldiers and 4 civilians killed in Afghanistan from the day Canada went there to the end of last month ............... let's hope there are no more!

Canadians are now out of fighting, but about 1000 will be there training Afghans, so they are still in danger.

That Cenotaph is rather unique ............ it is more like a 4-sided cairn, covered with plaques, one for each event in wich a soldier (or soldiers) were killed. Each plaque has the soldier's name AND an engraved photograph.

Okay....calm down you daft lot. It WAS there, I swear it. Just under where I have my IE logo with Genes Reunited at the side. It also had a little x by it. When I clicked on the x the box disappeared and I have absolutely no idea how to get it back or even how it arrived in the first place. :-S :-S

But....I am really thrilled. The photo of my Grandad on the left is also on FB. My cousin's daughter in Canada commented that she loves the photo of her gt.grandfather and that she has those medals in Canada. I was a bit taken aback by that because I know I have them here. :-S

We chatted for a while on FB and she posted a picture of them. I was astounded as they are a totally different set from the ones I have and from his earlier time in the Victorian era. I need to verify them but I think they will be part of his involvement in the Boxer Uprising. She also has his certificate for being Mentioned in Despatches signed by Winston Churchill.

She desperately wants me to have them - she says the pictures are enough for her and I was his granddaughter. I am overwhelmed by her thoughts and have gorn all goosebumpy at the prospect of handling this token of history of my famiy.

Fink I had better go to bed to recover my equilibrium.....

:-D :-D

Night all......from one very happy bunny. Thanks FB. :-D

I don't know why the UK abandoned the Cenotaph services on November 11 and moved to having them on the Second Sunday in November.

I can't even remember when that decision was made.

I do find it rather strange that the Sunday, not November 11, is the day you observe.

It seems to me that remembrance has more meaning when all the services, flypasts, salutes etc are at 11 am on November 11.

That of course does not mean that churches here do not have special services on either the Sunday before or Sunday after.

Schools here also have major remembrance ceremonies and services on November 10. It is quite amazing what soem of them do ...... and most are organised, planned and executed by the students themselves.

Important announcement from GR

Dear Persie

I've just had a look at the post and without reading the whole thread I'm really not sure why it was reported or removed. I can't see anything offensive in it and it looks like we made a mistake.

Please accept our apologies Persie - I really am sorry about this.

Kind Regards,

I am putting this up not just for you lot but for whoever did it... hmmm

It was pouring with rain all morning ................. yet the numbers in attendance at Remembrance Services at the Cenotaphs are still increasing.

More and more young people are attending, and young families are taking their children to the services.

Nice to see.

The rain stopped about noon ......... but we have just had thunder, a hailstorm, and a cloud burst! All in the space of about 10 minutes!!

We also have a wind warning for later this afternoon.

correction ........... the first blast of wind has just arrived!

So why do every other country have today as a holiday and we dont?? I would think that's why we have our service on a sunday as in the past most people did not work that day??

wish I could sit crossed legged on the floor Persie :-D

Hi Sylvs,

There have been 2 minutes silences all around the place today but, as you know, the official day is Sunday. I love watching the service in London when the Queen lays a wreath.

We have a big service at church on Remembrance Day and it literally is, standing room only. Even the aisles are crammed with children sitting crosslegged. I can do that anymore :-(

Poor Dea.....what a shattering time you have had and a dented purse into the bargain! Get a good rest. Night night.

Fans........you're really getting into the swing of this aren't you ? Mind you, you are a bit long in the tooth for swings :-P

It's my OH's birthday tomorrow so I sneaked upstairs before to wrap a few little prezzies for him. He is SO hard to buy for and says he has everything he needs....me being the main thing apparently!! Bless. <3

The kids are coming round for a Chinese take away tomorrow night - just hoping he doesn't go into 'freezing' mode part way through... :-S

Has anyone noticed the Find box above, along with Previous, Next & Options? I suppose someone will tell me that it has been there for years........
