Natter, natter, natter all night long. You lot must have kept the board whizzing round!

Thank you for breakfast Sylvs - even though I am a little late. Have been doing some housework first.

There was an item on accents and such like the other day on tv. I think it was to do with the BBC celebrating 50 years of something. Apparently, even the Queen doesn't speak the Queen's English and her voice has certainly altered over the years. The way the announcers used to speak in those days was absolutely ......er......incredible.!

Must go and get a shower.~~~~

I don't know about NEBOSH, but I think that it is about time someone started organising courses in BCS (Basic common sense), of much more practical use I would imagine.

Gin, how come that you caugh when most people cough?

Gee

Gee Report 17 Nov 2011 08:53

OGG.......caughing to much this mornin, I could hardly light me fag

Now the nose has started.....10 tissues every minute by the feel of it. Maybe thats a good sign....its on its way out

Having a steady morning as I dont have to be in too early, its NEBOSH and I dont teach that.....thankfully!

SylviaInCanada Report 17 Nov 2011 06:20

Ah now

I come from about 9 miles northeast of Manchester .............. and we despised the Mancunian accent!

Oldham had its own accent.

I then went to Liverpool ......... where the scouse accent used to be described as being Irish blown backwards through the Mersey Tunnel

Then I taught in Cheshire

both the last two modified my accent a little

There is enough there though that people can place me in Lancashire

Now what is Lancashire is it Mancunian or scouse or something different?

When I got offered a job working in west sussex I expected them to sound posh...they sounded more Essex than I do :-D

I can tell the difference between an Aussie and a Kiwi ................ but I can't tell where each might come from within their country.

The majority of Canadians now basically have a non-accent to me ............... except that I can tell Maritimers, and of course Newfies have a very characteristic acent.

It seems to me, after so long away, that everyone in the UK has an accent .... even the announcers on BBC World are not quite as non-accent as they used to be!

and anyone from Britain can recognise my Lancashire accent :-D

I watch a lot of these airport programs about passport control or traffic cops.

There was one last night about NZ in Auckland actually and was surprised your road signs looked very much like ours green and blue

By the way my pages are reading as 1551- 1556 at the moment and the circles have elongated and resemble capsules .. the numbers started getting accommodated after I mentioned that they were too long for the circles on here the other day... so they are watching me ... what do ya reckon?

You might be able to tell Jax, but when we are in Oz we are not picked as Kiwis.... we blend in very well and when we tell them they ask us to say fish and chips and then are surprised that we don't say fush and chups.

We can tell a fair dinkum Orstralian when they are here... There are so many of us over in OZ now ... probably put the crime rate up somewhat.

My OH is very good on picking the various British accents... he worked as a truckie all over Britain on his OE.
