I found a Daubeney in Woolwich with my missing person.
See your thread. Looks like a military connection.

I'm pages behind again and Sylvia has probably explained her xmas cards -- they're Unicef cards, guys. You're paying to support Unicef, not for the paper and ink!

Last time I bought them, they were about $15 for 10 basic cards, I think, more for fancier ones.

These days I seldom get it togteher to send out cards ... although now that you've reminded me ... I've got enough odd ends of Unicef batches from years gone by to probably cover the need if I do do it this year.

Here's this year's catelogue for purchase in Canada:

https://www.shopunicef.ca/ec/Portal.aspx?CN=97331B63BC40&MN=CCF64C7ADA1E

I usually try to find Canadian art with a "peace, joy" kind of greeting. Although the Canadian art they use tends to be really unattractive. I have a couple of Canadian paintings by reasonably well known artists I'd love to donate the rights to for Unicef cards, but the copyright still belongs to the artists or their estates at this point (two dead, one living). I could always ask. ;)

JC....we too have charity cards, but we dont pay that for them!

We can buy a 'good' pack of 10 for about £0.75....all sorts of charities...UNICEF included

Dea -- "I feel 'out of place' on other boards"

You and me both. Tips and Records, at least. It seems like that's where the, er, serious folk hang out, with their serious questions and serious answers. Not for the likes of me. ;)

I've noticed some charity shops selling their cards half price as though they were last year's. How can a Christmas card be out of date??

I went to Liverpool Cathedral a few weeks ago and. at this time of year, they have tables full of charity cards to sell. I went along the row picking cards from my favourite charities - it cost me more than I thought!

I'd really rather send cards to the folk I don't see very often rather than those I see all the time, but it seems churlish to miss the neighbours out. I have bought two special Thinking of You cards for 2 of them as they have both lost a spouse since last year.

Like, 7-8p per card? That doesn't make sense. It doesn't cover the cost of the paper and ink, surely.

Hmm.

Peace Doves
DESCRIPTION :
Send these elegant symbols of peace this Christmas.
Greeting inside: Multi-lingual 'Season's Greetings' (seven-languages).
Contains: 12 cards, 6 each of two designs.

CODE : FUN10118
PRICE : £4.95

That's not far off $10 Cdn. Cheaper than ours, yes, but maybe Brits are just cheapskates. ;)

I have stuck with Unicef rather than any other charity for xmas cards, because it invented the idea and the history is so meaningful.

Hi all

was just about to start posting when daughter phoned

Congratulations on the 10000 ... whoever got it!!

Janey's got it right, we buy UNICEF cards ..... packets of 10 or 20 ..........the cost ranged from $13.50 - 18 per packet of 10 (or ca £8-10) ......... and I bought 1 packet of 20 and 9 packets of 10, to give us 110 cards.

That's what most charities charge

At least half of our cards go overseas ...................... and we don't have a cheaper rate for cards in Canada. So add another $200 or so for postage

Christmas is very expensive for us ......... but it is the only time we have contact with a lot of people!

What? 110 cards is 1/2 of 110 for postage, not 2x110. ;) ?

I don't know what it costs to mail anything these days. I mail about 10 things a year, contracts I have to return signed originals of, and I get No.1 to do it.

Janey

Your reasons are exactly why we buy UNICEF cards every year

..... although it is always somewhat of an adventure finding out where their stall will be THIS year!

They don't have a store in Vancovuer, that closed down about 15 years ago.

Some libraries used to sell them ....... no longer do

Some malls used to let them have either one of the freestanding "barrows" or even a store front .................... not found one close to me for the last 3 years.

Some stores such as Safeway used to sell a small selection ........ no longer

Seemingly Ikea is now letting them have a stand just outside the pay area ......... wonder how long that will last?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 14 Nov 2010 21:45

Janey

about 50-60 go overseas ...... $1.70 each

about 30 into the US ....... $1.00 each

about 20-25 to the rest of Canada ..... $0.57 each

about 10 "hand delivered"

and postage costs increase if cards or letters are over the maximum size

OK, so $200 was a bit high

............ just under $150 for postage

An expensive time for you Sylvs......but I can understand the sending overseas idea.

I tend to go for things like MS Society, British Heart Foundation, National Autistic Society, Parkinson's Society because these are things which have affected my family. I will usually get some from a cancer charity too. I also like the 'Oxfam Unwrapped' idea, where you can 'buy' a goat or a tent or whatever to support overseas aid.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 14 Nov 2010 21:54

Postaege to the US is $1?? And $1.70 overseas?? Who knew!

Maybe I'll send ecards. ;)

I buy Wales Air Ambulance ones except this year I did buy one special one that took my fancy for someone.
Mother insits I send her a "proper"christmas card.
WAA,do ones with Robins and Snowmen on,but I prefer the ones with the helicopter on delivering prezzies from santa, then you can see the charity it is for.

Will have to ask mother to buy the Parky charity ones ,will get her to buy them online so she gets more practise on her laptop.
