Friend of mine on another site lives in South Wales and has a daughter doing Duke of Edinburgh Gold on a self-directed program. Daughter already speaks 3 or 4 languages and is heading to specialising in them, and decided to do another language as part of the DofE work
........ . Chose Spanish, and would do do it at "night school" as I used to call it, now called soemthing else. Persuaded her mother to also register with her
They went along to the first class ....................... no Spanish spoken at all, 2 hour class spent introducing people to each other
Second class ...... just about 5 minutes spent on Spanish
Teacher was Mexican American!

Had a good day, I think
OH bought 4 new winter tires for the car, $700
The he took me to my favourite Art Glass Studio for their Annual Christmas Sale, I wasn't going to buy anything (ha ha), but found a lovely "vase" that will be just great on a display shelf in the kitchen, half price, about $65 (definitely NOT for flowers though!!!)
Then we went to Ikea to buy some toys for MJB, look at ideas for inserts etc for the new drawers, and to look at bar stools for the breakfast counter .......... about $350
Saw Unicef card stand while in the lineup to pay at Ikea, so went and bought our Christmas cards ........ 110 cards, over $175
Came home .................... think I'm going to be sending him out to work for pay soon!!!

I'm not surprised you've gone to bed Sylvs. You would need to lie down after that little spending spree! Sounds like you had a good time though. Thank you for breakfast and lunch sounds wonderful.
Morning Ginnykins.

Edit - this was typed last night at 8.30pm - internet back for a while now
Glad to see you are up Ginny and Cyn
Sorry Gins
my internet is so flaky - coming and going - only quickly read the page
We left UK for good in 2003 - and as for veggies - in the restaurants - hardly any veggie main dishes - I actually cant think of any - my veggie friends complain bitterly -----lots of starters are veggie - so they usually have a meal of starters
But in the shops the choice of vegetables is unbelievable - there was quite I lot I had never seen - and there are still fruits here that I had never eaten before or even seen
One the main things I miss about UK are the Rates --- in Cambs rates for my 3 bed Bungalow - which I know are always dearer that houses - where just under 2000 pounds a year - rates only
Here my Rates and Water and Effluence - are - wait for it 45 euros every six months - so 90 Euros for a year - and this has just gone up - first increase since 2003 from 37 euros for 6 months
My total budgeted expenses each month .- covering gas (cooking only ) electric - water - rates - house death and car insurance -diesel - car service and repairs - MOT - broadband - internet telephone - satellite TV via broadband - 2 mobiles - (one contract one PAYG) - so everything except food
160 euros a month -------I save out of my old age pension-
We eat the very best of food - have superb free medical treatment - without any waiting list - ( although in fairness Spain bills UK each year for our total medical costs ) - I have a free over 65 card - giving me 60% discount on many items - travel - glasses ( not that I wear them ) had my eyes "done" here and first the first time in my life I have 20/20 vision - bl¡¡ddy incredible
Yes I miss UK - family especially - but at my age - I want a bit of time for us ---- which is why we came
Crave British foods - but in reality when I get them - they are not actually as I remember the taste --- this could be old age - or simply tastes changing
Think that covers all the questions
Let me know what I forgot

Ginns
I have a brother and sister who have lived in France ( Nr Cahors ) for over 15 years - my eldest sister lived there also - but she returned to UK after her husband died - and she died on the 22 Nov 3 years ago this month Bless
The cost of living is much more expensive - even in rural France - than here -
If you live along the coast here - the Rates are more in line with UK - but as we did not want to live on the coast ( especially where Brits congregate) anyway - it did not matter
We never thought we would be able to afford a house - relatively near the coast - ( only 15 mins or so away ) but we fell in love with our village and bought the house and some land behind ( the majority of which is now our garden ) --- cheaply by any standards - and the best thing at the time - no Brits whatsoever
We have a couple of Brits now who have holiday places ( but we dont know them - apart from 1 ) and 6 months or so a missionary and his wife and son moved permanently into village - but they come and go frequently
We were very lucky - we worked hard - without the benefit of lanquage to integrate and just before our 3rd year here we were invited to be mayor domos - which means you are on the committee that organises the annual fiesta and the smaller fiestas through the year - the first ever foreigners - it was a real honour
So we are - in the lingo Fondoneros - which as the village is Fondon - means we are Fondon people
And in reality - we know we could not have what we have here - in UK - I would be just another poor pensioner - watching the electric meter in the winter - and OH having to work everyday
My tinternet is more than pants ---------it is bl¡¡dy big knickers - the man is here in morning -

This is great - I have perfect internet connection - have read the pages - and no one is about -
Still staggered by Sylvia christmas cards - does that include the postage -
Lovely lunch once again - think I try the pumkin soup today - all veg with my pork - but not zucchini - courgette - only eat them if they have been griddled until very brown and crispy - had at my sisters once and she had boiled them into mush - ugh -
Also was thinking - all the comments about Fans - what if she reports back I am awful - and you ask me to leave the thread -
Do I have a right to appeal

Morning all,
Had my 'light breakfast' and am now looking forward to Sylvia's lovely lunch !!!
Renes,
I am sure she won't do that but I think your 'real' problem will be that she will find it all SO wonderful that she will decided to move there permanently !!!
Now, that would be a real shock for your village !!!!!!!
