I have finally tracked down Frances Dales, wife of William Smith of Great Grimsby. Frances Dales was born in South ThHoresby , Lincolnshire in 1798 and died there in 1835 |

Some success! I have found George Catterson Smith baptised in St James Church, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire in April 1831. His father is William Smith, currier and his mother is Frances (Dales). I then found two older sisters, Martha born 1826 and Ann Frances born 1828/1829. |

It is possible that there is confusion between Dales and Stockdale but even so I cannot find a George Smith born in Great Grimsby or Lincolnshire with father = William Smith and Mother = Frances Stockdale |

Is it possible that George could not remember his mother's maiden name and confused Stockdale and Dales? |

To try and find further info on my George Smith born Grimsby c1830 I am considering including Lincolnshire in a possible trip to the UK in 2011. Any suggestions as to where I would need to go to access relevant records; who I should contact before visiting etc. |

The Catterson name is interesting as George was apprenticed to George Catterson of Beverley in 1813. However his mother's maiden name is given as Dales on his marriage and death certificates - Frances Dales on one and Mary Dales on another! |

I have seen the LDS microfilm of the Bainton parish register and it shows William Smith of the parish of Great Grimsby and Frances Dales of this (Bainton) parish. William Smith served an apprenticeship in Beverley, Yorkshire and may have met Frances Dales there |

Jan, Sorry i omitted to say that he arrived in Australia in 1852, married twice and died in Bendigo, Victoria in 1904 and that his mother's name is not consistent in OZ records - Frances on a marriage certificiate and Mary on his death certificate. |

I am trying to find information on a Frances Dales who married William Smith in 1825 in Beverley Yorkshire. William came from Great Grimsby in Lincolnshire. My g-g=grandfather George Catterson Smith was born in Great Grimsby c1830 and his mother was given as Frances Dales on his marriage cert. and Mary Dales on his death cert. I cannot connect a george Smith to either of these women. Any assistance would be gratefully received |
