cgsmith10 Report 27 Oct 2012 10:37

I have finally tracked down Frances Dales, wife of William Smith of Great Grimsby. Frances Dales was born in South ThHoresby , Lincolnshire in 1798 and died there in 1835

Some success! I have found George Catterson Smith baptised in St James Church, Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire in April 1831. His father is William Smith, currier and his mother is Frances (Dales). I then found two older sisters, Martha born 1826 and Ann Frances born 1828/1829.
In 1841 Census Martha and Ann aged 15 and 12 respectively are living with a Mary Rogerson in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. In 1851 UK Census Martha Smith is shown as housekeeper and niece of Thomas Dales in South Thoresby, Lincolnshire. In 1861 UK Census Martha is niece and housekeeper ot Joseph Dales in Louth, Lincolnshire. Thomas and Joseph Dales had a sister Frances Dales born c1799 so it looks as though I have the correct Frances. Next challenge is to reconcile this Frances with Frances Dales marrying William Smith of Great Grimsby in 1825 in Bainton, Yorkshire. William served an apprenticeship in Beverley, Yorkshire from 1813. Must be a connection through Dales families who are spread throughout North Lincolnshire and Southern Yorkshire

cgsmith10 Report 17 Mar 2011 09:55

It is possible that there is confusion between Dales and Stockdale but even so I cannot find a George Smith born in Great Grimsby or Lincolnshire with father = William Smith and Mother = Frances Stockdale

Is it possible that George could not remember his mother's maiden name and confused Stockdale and Dales?
Just a thought.

To try and find further info on my George Smith born Grimsby c1830 I am considering including Lincolnshire in a possible trip to the UK in 2011. Any suggestions as to where I would need to go to access relevant records; who I should contact before visiting etc.

His father is shown as a currier of Great Grimsby on george's marriage and death certificates

cgsmith10 Report 8 Jul 2010 03:10

The Catterson name is interesting as George was apprenticed to George Catterson of Beverley in 1813. However his mother's maiden name is given as Dales on his marriage and death certificates - Frances Dales on one and Mary Dales on another!

Have seen this entry and cannot find wife, Frances (Dales) Smith.
As per PollyPoppet 1851 census info William's wife is shown as Fanny, 44 born Waltham, Lincolnshire. I cannot be sure this is the Frances Dales marrying William Smith in 1825 in Bainton Yorkshire.
Also cannot find a birth record for George Catterson Smith with father William and mother Frances

cgsmith10

cgsmith10 Report 28 Jun 2010 06:08

I have seen the LDS microfilm of the Bainton parish register and it shows William Smith of the parish of Great Grimsby and Frances Dales of this (Bainton) parish. William Smith served an apprenticeship in Beverley, Yorkshire and may have met Frances Dales there

cgsmith10 Report 28 Jun 2010 06:06

Jan, Sorry i omitted to say that he arrived in Australia in 1852, married twice and died in Bendigo, Victoria in 1904 and that his mother's name is not consistent in OZ records - Frances on a marriage certificiate and Mary on his death certificate.
I cannot find any birth reference in UK records showing George Catterson Smith as the son of either William Smith and a Frances Dales or of William Smith and a Mary Dales. I have found a John Smith of Great grimsby apprenticing his son William to a George Catterson of Beverley, Yorkshire in 1813. I think this is where the middle name of Catterson came from.

I am trying to find information on a Frances Dales who married William Smith in 1825 in Beverley Yorkshire. William came from Great Grimsby in Lincolnshire. My g-g=grandfather George Catterson Smith was born in Great Grimsby c1830 and his mother was given as Frances Dales on his marriage cert. and Mary Dales on his death cert. I cannot connect a george Smith to either of these women. Any assistance would be gratefully received
