1861 census for Bridlington please

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Frances

Frances Report 19 Jun 2010 20:55

The person I am trying to match is :-

Births Jun 1851
NICHOLSON Mary Ann Bridlington
23 28

The two single line census that seem to match are :-

1861
Nicholson Mary 1851 Brant Broughton Bridlington, Bridlington

and after marriage
1891
Gray Mary 1852 Bridlington Quay Bridlington, Bridlington

I cannot see a place near Bridlington with a name like Brant Broughton so please can anybody see an 1861 census for her that shows her with family that could solve the riddle.

Many thanks,
Frances

Thank you alviegal, that is the match, so I shall just have to accept not finding the precise place!

Frances Report 19 Jun 2010 21:06

Thanks Vera for a fairly different rendition - the enumerator's writing must be weird to get so many differences!

Frances, looking at the image, it actually reads Bridlington Quay not Brant Broughton. Heaven knows how the transcriber made that mistake.

Brant Broughton is a small village in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England

Thanks for clearing up those oddities alviegal. The only puzzling place left is Georges birthplace, Mapperton. The only George Nicholson registered in Bridlington is George Meek Nicholson and that middle name occurs again but not to a member of this family. Any suggestions please?

Nafferton is not far from Bridlington. Well nearer to Driffield

Which is what I think the 1861 reads as

Thanks Vera, there is a Mappleton on the coast just below Hornsea, maybe it's there.

Vera

Now there's a nice start to the new day (for sleuthing ancestors). Thank you Vera, Maureen and alveigal. Taking Vera's first reference to Mappleton I found the George - Skirlaugh 1849 and that Skirlaugh District included Mappleton.
Yesterday was for the wife but today is for the other half Robert. Again checking the single line '91 and '61 I found Robert in Bridlington, insisting that it is his place of birth! Just on the off chance I tried IGI and voila :-

ROBERT GRAY
Christening: 15 DEC 1852 Bridlington Quay, Yorkshire
Father: JOHN GRAY
Mother: MARY
RACHEL 07 OCT 1840, RICHARD 05 MAR 1843, WILLIAM 24 JAN 1847

My question is does the 1861 census show any more children for this family please?
