Find Ancestors

Am looking for help on tracking down my ancestors.

My GG Grandmother was Hannah Atherton, born around 1845 in Billinge, Lancs and married to both Thomas Littler and Thomas Wilcock.

Her father was William Atherton, born around 1820. Census records suggest he was born in Spain, but I have come to a grinding halt in finding information on any previous ancestors.

I believe William married Margaret Littler, and I have him on the 1871 and 1891 censuses, but no luck on the others.

Very keen to share information with anyone who can help. William was a nail and rivet maker, so it's not as if he "came from money" so I'm intrigued as to what took his parents to Spain, and what brought William back.

Do you have Hannah's birth cert?

Rose, I don't have Hannah's birth certificate yet, it's on order.

When I first came across "Spain" as place of birth it did occur to me that Spain might be a place in Lancashire or the local area, but one of the censuses clearly states "Spain, British Subject", so it's fairly clear to me that he meant Spain the country.

I had come across the William Atherton born Woolwich and assumed they were 2 different people, given the seeming clarity in his birthplace as Spain.

Anne-Marie - no details, or even ideas, on his parents.

That Emma on the 1841 Census aged 4 ....... is the same Emma age 14 on the 1851 ........ and on that census she is noted as SISTER

If I am correct, this is Hannah aged 7 from the 1841 Census, and her mother has re-married to Thomas Fryer

I think the name correction is wrong ... I think she really is Hannah Atherton, daughter of Hannah age 57

we don't seem able to find Hannah b. ca 1845 with father William on any censuses


BUT there is a Hannah born ca 1847, illegitimate daughter of William's sister Hannah



I wonder if your Hannah is in fact that daughter of Hannah Atherton, b. ca 1834, and that she gave William's name as her father on her marriage certificate as so many illegitimate children have done.

Well Sylvia, that's certainly given me something to think about, and no doubt something that probably can't be proven...

Will wait with baited breath for Hannah's birth certificate, though if what you suspect is true, then it's potentially useless.

Whereabouts in Canada are you? I'm in Vancouver, BC - wondered why I was getting responses "in the middle of the night"...

that 1847 marriage of Sylvia's seems to indicate that at sometime hannah' surname was Wood ( or her father's surname was)
