Does anyone know if the electoral register was in force in 1894 ? and would it be by name or address ?

There was an electoral list of sorts I imagine, but so few people could vote it wouldn't be of much use to most of us. What were you looking for?

Linda I'll have a look, if he is in there it will give an address,

some can be found on here which is free:

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/

they are fascinating though can be a bit tedious to search. Though I did find all my family in Lincoln so it was very good

Thankyou, i will try this site. I have been trying to find the birth of my gran for 6yrs now, i don't think she was registered for some reason, she was supposedly born in Grimsby 1894. The family moved around alot (biddleswade,Grimsby,Notts then Derby. I have found all her sisters and brothers registered but not my gran, but i won't give up

Have you already asked for help finding her? If not, why not give it a go - worth a try.

Hi Jan, yes I have asked for help but to no avail, it mystifies me that I can trace all the others but not her, there is nothing registerd for a Jessie Louisa Churchyard, on the census that my gtgrandad filled out he always put that she was born in Grimsby 1894, i even look under her mothers maiden name, i just think for some reason she wasn't registered, it even crossed my mind about being born in a workhouse.

Linda the Churchyard family are not coming up on any Directories

Is this them in 1901
Name: Jessie Churchard
[Jessie Churchyard]
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1895
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: James
Gender: Female
Where born: Grimley, Lincolnshire, England (Grimsby on image)

Civil parish: Derby
Ecclesiastical parish: St Barnabas
County/Island: Derbyshire
Country: England
Registration district: Derby
Sub-registration district: Derby
ED, institution, or vessel: 74
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 111
Household Members: Name Age
James Churchard 9
Jessie Churchard 6
Gertrude Churchard 3
May Churchard 10 months

by the way if she was born in a Workhouse it is most probable she would be registered as it was the duty of the Master to register births and deaths.

Looking at 1911, they moved around quite a bit. maybe just didn't bother with registration (or they kidnapped jessie Vickers - just kidding!!)

Linda I am beginning to think you are right and the birth was not registered for some reason. They obviously moved about a lot, perhaps when they realised she was not registered they were in a different place and were worried about being fined for not doing it where she was born.

There aren't even any female Churchyards reg with a different name that they may have changed. I know this happened because it took me ages, like you, to find a grandfather. He had been registered as Robert but baptised Matthew which is the name he used all his life

Sorry for not replying yesterday Jennifer, went out at 6.30.Ihave tried looking at different names aswell, i even looked under the surname Coldham which was my grans mothers maiden name, it does seem strange that the other 7 kids were registered even though being born in diff counties, those that were born be4 1911 were all bap in the same year here in Derby. Nevermind i will just keep thinking of other ways.
