As i said, here goes then....
In the 1841 census Ninjalady provided for Mary Porter, i was both surprised and delighted to learn that Daniel and Christian Porter had a son John born 1829.
Reseaching him ... he was born John Auber Porter.
I found his marriage entry only to learn that ... "Wah! guess wot i found?"... He married Anne Maria Finch!...Who confused us in the 1851 census for David Porter, which stated she was Anne Maria Porter, daughter of David and Mary ... whereas in fact she was Mary's unmarried sister aged 17 who later went on to marry Davids brother John in 1856!
Now, this is the part where the "Temper Tantrum! set in, because as determined as i was not to ask any further help from you guys...........i went on a mission to find John and Anne together in later census's .... anyway to cut along story short, poor john died in 1858. two years after his marriage to Anne...Boo Hoo!
On a good note, i have managed to marry off Mary Porter and George Sims daughter Winifred i am on a roll, all thanks to you....thankyou so much. Sue x

Hi SomersetGirl, and bless you for hanging in there for me. I too am stumped about the death of David. But at the end of the day, as sure as eggs are eggs, he's dead! So no point me popping off to the hospital with a bag of grapes and a bottle of lucozade! LOL!
So, as you are obviously a glutton for punishment (and i love you for it!)

Mary C Porter (sister of David) born 1841 Leith Scotland (how odd!)
1851 Census, with parents Daniel and Christian ...
1861 Census.... Mary is a servant with the Mariner family, aged 21. Res: Whitechapel, Middlesex.
and that is as far as i can go.......

Thankyou x

David Richardson Porter - Round 2!

I am pleased to announce that with all credit due to Ninjalady, Jonesey and especially SomersetGirl, i just about have this one in the bag!
Not only do i now know that the enumerator for the 1851 census was a heavy drinker with a screw loose and held a bitter resentment towrds the name Porter! but i also know that Maria/Marion Kate Porter was indeed the daughter of David and Mary.
I checked out Jonesey's 1861 census, which states David was a former Ship Steward (which he was in the 1851 census) it also states that he is a widower. I found a death entry for wife Mary in 1857 so that all ties in nicely.
As Anne Marie Porter is obviously not the daughter of David and Mary but possibly Marys sister, i am not too concerned about her.
To wrap this up, i am trying to find a death entry for david but am having no luck. If anyone can please find it, i would as always be very grateful.

Well thats the good news, the bad news is the fact that i have now moved on to Davids sister Mary and its not looking good!! And so, if this thread should happen to pop up later in the day, you might all want to do a runner!!

Thankyou everyone Sue x

PricklyHolly Report 8 Jun 2010 21:36

Ok. here is my last post of the evening because i really need to go and self harm!!!
A witness at David and Mary's wedding is ... Anne Maria Finch!
Which i assumed to be Mary's mother or sister. And i think it would be fair to say, that if David and Mary had a daughter, they might well have named her ... Anne Maria ... but the Anne Maria in the 1851 Census cannot possibly be their daughter....and so, if she is a Porter as it states in the Census, surely she must be Davids sister???
Will be back tomorrow, for many more hours of frustrating pleasure!! Sue x

Maybe if you look at it another way, perhaps David is Head of House.... with wife Mary. And David's sister Anne with her illlegitimate daughter Merion (Marion) who David claims to be his Grandaughter?? Sue
