Thank you. I did a search on Ancestry. Punched in Lucy Tomlin, Mother Mary Squires and up came a record for her birth Jun 1851.

Yes,the CLACKs are a pain !

Good luck with the STEP/TOMLIN question.

Thanks Elizabeth. Those STEPS have me intrigued. I would love to know what they mean. I might email OXHS to see if they know. The James on your tree is not the same James as on my tree. I know from bitter experiance - I followed the wrong trail for ages. My James is the son of Edward Clack 1797 and Susannah Hathaway.
Have a good day.

I wonder if it would be worth e-mailing the BRO (details on their website) and asking if they could check the actual register for Lucy's baptism as you have the date they may be willing to do it

Off out to visit a NT property that used to be in the family-long ago !

Back later

I might have guessed those pesky CLACKs would surface somewhere !!

James CLACK born 1825 is in my tree too !

He was the son of John CLACK and Ann CAMBREY/KIMBREY (Ann's father James was a brother of my 3 x gt grandfather)

Draycot Moor is/was part of Longworth

I feel it is your Lucy in 1851 and it is a error in transcription which gives James and not John as the father

I do not know what the STEP alias TOMLIN means but would not think it means step child-the Alfred baptised in 1811 is married and baptising children in 1837 and he is STEP alias TOMLIN
Both names appear in capitols

Odd-I wonder if anyone else has an opinion ?

Hi Elizabeth
The John Tomlin 1848 you refer to is on my tree but does STEP mean he was a stepson?

According to my records John was born in 1848 in Draycott Moor. He was chr 11 Jun 1848, Hinton, St Margaret of Antioch.

He married Rachel Clack 11 Mar 1872, Clanfield, St Stephen.

Rachel Clack born 1844, Clanfield, was the sister to James Clack, 1825.

James Clack married Lucy Tomlin, the sister of John 1848, 30 Sep 1871 Faringdon Berks England.

All this still leaves me unsure about Lucy's parents. In a census record she was recorded as being a housekeeper for her father. It sounds as if his wife had died leaving Lucy to help bring up her younger siblings. At least that is what I thought but your posting yesterday sounds as if the family were split between John & Mary & Charles & Ruth, with no sign of Lucy. Have I got that right? Does STEP mean stepchildren?

Once again thank you for your time.

Regards
Maureen

That's Brilliant! Thank's Elizabeth. Sorry I took so long to reply but I'm afraid bed called before I got your message.

It is strange there is no mention of Lucy b Jun 1851 in the baptisms. I wonder why that is? Perhaps she was baptised elsewhere.

It is Lucy I am most interested in as she is my great grandmother. I suppose I shall have to send for her birth certificate to be really sure that Mary Squires is her mother and not some other Mary.

Thanks a million Elizabeth.

It looks likely that Mary Squires is the Mary married to John Tomlin in census records don't you think?

Thanks for your time.
