Choccy & I cant find Henry P Jones any where in the 1901 census!
I am wondering if he could have died just before the census & his wife didn’t know about it, as Elizabeth is married in 1901 census,

7 The Polygon Clapham, (Holy Trinity) Wandsworth, London Ref RG 23/464 page 20, JONES Elizabeth Head *Married* age 24, cooking & charring, own account at Home, Oxon Oxford,
but as I don’t know where Henry Percy Jones was I am having trouble finding his death, the one Choccy found married Edith Sly,

Hi Sylvia,
Thanks for that, have searched initials only & place of birth still no luck!

SylviaInCanada Report 5 Jun 2010 22:37

people in institutions were sometimes listed only under their initials, with birth year and birth place

This was to protect their privacy

so try searching on birth year +/3 and birth place??

or possibly h p j, h j, p j

I suggested the birth year and place first because some of them were also registered without any entry in the "name" column

Oh ....... and isn't there a prison in Devon so that a death in the prison could have been registered in Plymouth????

Thank you for that, I found a marriage for him
Marriages Mar 1901 JONES Henry Percy Plymouth to SLY Edith Ellen Plymouth 5b 414, this was also on someone’s family tree so I discounted that one, He may be listed as Just Henry/ Harry Jones making it more difficult.
Thanks Ann E

Sorry Ann, not finding him anywhere in 1901.

It's very strange that Banns were called three times and no sign of a marriage, even though she said she was a Widow in 1905.

Logically you would think he died between 1900 (before they had a chance to get married) and 1905 when his 'widow' re-married.

If he was in prison in 1901 and died, I'm not sure where his death might be registered.

Ann Report 4 Jun 2010 09:37

Thank you all very much,
That looks like the chap I am looking for, I have details of trial, & a report from the newspaper , stating that he was living at 73 James Street in April 1891,
Why I am asking about him is my great aunt Elizabeth Mary Higgins, born 1877 daughter of Alfred & Elizabeth Higgins, George Street, St Clements Oxford, Elizabeth’s sister said that she was 1st married to a man named Jones & that he died in prison, nothing more is known on him,
on her 2nd marriage certificate it states Elizabeth Mary Jones widow, She was married 28 July 1905 Registry Office Paddington, London.

In the 1901 census,7 The Polygon Clapham, (Holy Trinity) Wandsworth, London Ref RG 23/464 page 20
JONES Elizabeth Head Married age 24, cooking & charring, own account at Home, Oxon Oxford

She was at home with mum & dad in the 1891 census age 13 in George Street St Clements, Oxford,

I have been looking for this marriage for years with no luck, but have now found this

Entry in the Banns Book Clapham Parish Church 1900 No 63
Henry Percy Jones B & Elizabeth Mary Higgins S Both of this parish called 12 Aug, 19 Aug 26 Aug by R B Littlewood Rector, No Marriage Found!! Have looked at original page for 1900.
So is the Henry Percy Jones above the one I am looking for, no other found,

Please can any one find him in the 1901 census,

Ann E
