WoodfortheTrees Report 4 Jun 2010 14:22

New Update:
Although Flick has posted the marriage of James's Jervis and Mary Martin I have not been able to find it myself so I have been unable to find Jame and Mary's fathers. However, I tried searching for the baptism of James with a father William and came up with this.

County Shropshire
Place Market Drayton
Church St Mary's
BaptismDate 04 Nov 1798
Forename James
FatherForename William
MotherForename Sarah
FatherSurname JERVIS
Abode TYRLEY
FileNumber 9694

I checked on the map and Market Drayton, Tyrley and Mucklestone are all very close together, though Mucklestone is just over the border in Staffordshire. Therefore I think it is safe to assume that this is him. I have also found an Ann (14/01/1796), Thomas (28/02/1796, family living in Almington), Jane (22/05/1791, living Almington, no mother given), Sarah (21/10/1793, living tyrley, no mother given) and a Thomas (05/04/1789, living almington, no mother given), all baptised in Market Drayton.

However, I have not been able to find a William Jervis, although on the 1861 census there is a William Jevis (aged 68) living three doors down from James Jervis, which seems like a large concidence, so I will have to keep researching this. Thanks for all your help so far. Aimmie

Hi Aimmie, I haven't gone into your research, but when in doubt, try looking for 'Jarvis' - 'Gervis' - 'Gerris' and 'Gervais'!!! I have the name Jervis in my tree and it has been down on both census and certificates as any of the above! Not an easy name to follow at times.. Happy hunting. Cx.

WoodfortheTrees Report 3 Jun 2010 14:59

Right, this is a summary of what I know so far
Ancestor: Peter Mousley Jervis, baptised 15/04/1855 Mucklestone Staffordshire, Agricultural Labourer
Siblings: Annie (bap 09/11/18340), Ellen (bap 16/07/1837), Betsy (bap 23/02/1840), William Martin (bap 11/12/1842), Fanny (uncertain birth/bap date), Mary (bap 17/01/1848), Catherine (bap 07/07/1850) and Alice (bap 19/11/1854) all in Muclestone
Father: James Jervis, born c1801 Mucklestone, agricultural labourer
Mother: Mary Martin, born c1812 MaerStaffordshire

On the 1851 census there is a William Jervis (aged 78, a retired farmer) living with James and Mary. I am assuming he is Jame's father but I cannot seem to find trace him before this census.

Also on the 1851 census a John Matin, aged 11, born Maer, is living with James and Mary Jervis. I am assuming he is a relation of Mary but I haven't yet been able to discover their exact relationship. In 1861 census he is living with a Joseph Bunn (46, agricultural labourer) and a Jane Bunn (45). I am assuming Jane is some relation to James, although again I have not been able to trace exactly what relation yet.

Also on the 1861 census, living 3 doors down from James and Mary Jervis, is a William Jervis (aged 66, Shoemaker), his wife Hannah (aged 64) and their children William (aged 28, bootmaker) and Ellen (aged 22, bootbinder) all born in staffordshire. I am assuming William is some relation to James Jervis but as I haven't yet traced Jame's parents I don't yet know what the exact relationship is.

Any help clearing up some of these issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks once again for all your time and help.
