If you've got access to a list of miners killed in that pit, try looking up some other names. I would guess most would be rego'ed at the same time, but some could maybe be recovered immediately.

Probably that was the answer. I know that when I first started with this family I was never able to find graves or burials for William and Thomas in the local cemetery.
Thanks again

Mary,

Found this online. It is possible they didn't get the remains of some the miners up until 1874.

Coroners Inquiries were called week after week at the Railway Tavern at Ince, where the colliery proprietors gave a progress report on how the bodies where going to be recovered. This was no easy job, firstly the pit had to be de-watered which was too take many months. In addition there was severe damage to the shafts linings, huge voids caused by the blast and water had to be filled in and made safe. It was to be over twelve months before the remains of the victims started to be recovered, and that's all they were...remains. The intense heat of the fires and explosions reduced the bodies of the victims to mere charred bones. Many of these were found at the foot of the upcast shaft, washed out of the Nine Feet Mine by the water it was presumed. Identification of these was considered impossible, some were able to be identified. Not in the normal sense though, for they were too mutilated even for that. One was identified by his clogs by a witness, for the clogs formerly belonged to him.

I understand that the bodies were badly burned. Could it be that positive identification could not be done? (No DNA then nor dental x-rays.) Is it possible that thay had to wait a number of years before someone could be officially declared dead?

Thank you for your help. If that is not them why would they not be registered in 1871. Thought it might be that they had to wait until they had the inquests on all the 70 men that had died .Seems a bit odd though.

Thanks also to Andy

Mary,
The only thing I can suggest is to send for the death certificates.....unfortunately they could be the wrong ones.

Vera
Yes certain. Sept 6th 1871.
I don't think there was any separate burials as it was a big pit explosion and a fire but there is a memorial plaque in the local cemetery.

Mary,
Somehow that doesn't seem quite right to have died in 1871 but not registered until 1874. Are you absolutely sure about when the explosion happened.

Hi Vera
Thankyou for your help.
Please can I ask another question.
I am trying to buy all the Bmd certificates for the family.
William Finch, Sarah's husband and one of the sons was killed in a pit explosion when 70 men died. That was in Sept 1871. The only death certs I can find for Thomas and son William was reg June 1874 both reg on same page and had correct ages for their deaths. Do you think this could be correct or not ?

Please could someone look up Sarah Finch a widow born about 1814/15 in the 1891 census. She would probably be living in the Ince area of Wigan.
Thank you
Mary
