Hi,
Trying to find any info on a Carrington Billings born around 1800 in manchester England, possibly then moved to Scotland. He was married to a Eunice Millets and they had at least 1 son named William born around 1830 who emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1948
Can anyone help?

Hi Brad
Found this

Carrington Billings ( approx 1800 ) of Manchester. England.
married Eunice Millett. They had a son William ( 1830 )

William Billings came out to Australia before 1855.

William Billings married in 1855 in Victoria. Australia to Margaret Turcan ( 1837-1924 ) They had 13 children.

Have you heard of Carrington Billings and Eunice Millett.

If you have any info I would be most grateful.

There is more on William on Rootsweb but haven't found anything more on Carrington

Cheers

Ingrid

that seems to be the extent of the information available anywhere

which makes me wonder if William Billings was the source of it all, via his marriage or death certificate in Australia

which then begs the question of whether he was telling the truth or not.

I haven't seen anything that indicates when he might have emigrated to Australia

He was apparently born in 1832, which means he should be on at tleast the 1841 Census in the UK ............ nada

I wonder if anyone has found his passage out?

Could this be his immigration?

Family Name First Name Age Month Year Ship Port Fiche Page
BILLING WM [age] 29 [date] NOV 1852 [ship] RIP VAN WINKLE [ref] B 017 002

If so someone is telling porkies cos thjat makes him born c1823!

Mel, why does his notice say Alexander?

Oh I see now, his son Alexander died the same year and place (1914, Colac) as William did. He was 52.

Index to Wills, Probate and Administration Records 1841-1925
Given Name Alexander
Surname Billings
File number 135/849
Death Date 1 Mar 1914
Grant Date 13 Jun 1914
Nature of Grant A
Occupation Driver
Residence Colac

NLA newspapers has an article in the Argus on 14 March 1879 about a fire where "William Billings, bush carpenter, residing at Colac", was principal witness. It mentions his two sons, Alexander and William.

Warning

it just might be that Brad knows all this .

.......... I believe that it is his tree on Rootsweb, and it has a lot of comprehensive information on it ........ deaths, marriages, descendents, etc

It just comes to a screeching halt with Carrington Billings and Eunice

and as I said before ........ I wonder whether William told porkies about his parents (and even possibly place of birth) on his marriage certificate?

Which means that the informant on his death certificate (wife?, son?) would also have told a falsehood because that is the "history" they would have been told.

We will have to wait till Brad comes back on here to answer some of our Questions.
You may be right Sylvia and William told alot of porky's. I know as one of mine I have discovered told lots and it makes searching very difficult.

Cheers

Sorry guys, have not had a chance to get back to this. Apparently you people have done a lot of work searching for me....thank you very much. I do not have William Billings Death Certificate, but sounds like that may be a good place to start investigating. I have his marriage Certificate dated 19th December 1855 Showing birthplace as Manchester and his spouse Margaret Turcan of Torryburn, Fife, Scotland. Married at The Manse Geelong. The marriage certificate shows parents as Carrington Billings and Eunice Millet(s) but as you say I may have relied on this info as gospel as it may not be correct, because the brick wall at Carrington does not appear to be able to be broken. I am not at expert at Genealogy so would appreciate any assistance that can be given.
Thank you so much

PS Yes my tree is on Rootsweb along with a tree of Mary Cotter who I have made contact with but she has come up against the same brick wall......

Have now downloaded image of death certificate. Parents details are the same. Emigrated to Australia 1848. Informant appears to be undertaker Thomas Whitfield Shannon? of Colac Cemetry. Childrens age at death or deceased will certainly help me on my way.
Is there anywhere else I can find any relevant info?
Thanks

the question to ask is

where did the undertaker get his information from?!

I consider death certificates to be the least useful certificates .... because so much of the information on there is what the infromant knows

..... which boils down to what did the deceased tell people?

and how truthful was he?

Of course, in England, parents names are not on the death certificate of an adult.

In England, you have never had to produce any documentary evidence of the deceased's name, birth date, marital status etc etc.

Is it the same in Australia?

in other words, might we be looking for a non-existent person?

Brad Report 30 May 2010 11:11

Hi Sylvia,
Not sure on procedure in Australia but I dont think documentary evidence is required on death.....although my sisters partner passed away recently and you should see the paperwork to prove they were a couple for superannuation. Even though they lived together for 25 years but never married she has to prove they had a relationship!!
I will keep looking for my ancestors but will not totally focus on Carrington in case there is some mis-information there.
Thanks for your help
