Most people order online at GRO site (general records office):

www.gro.gov.uk

You need to register and have a credit/debit card (though there is a form you can download if you prefer to apply by post). Costs £9.25.

You need the reference number really - have you located the record? If not you can try Freebmd as suggested above, though not all records for 1940 will be on there yet, in which case someone can look it up on Ancestry or FMP.

You might get all the info you need for free if you post the name here and ask for a look-up. It's worth a try!

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 4 May 2010 22:52

It might be on Ancestrys Marriages and Banns?

If you give the details I am sure someone would look for you...

If it is on there it would save you the £9.25p if not then Jans info on how is the only way.

Spoilt Londoners!!! - obviously you're kidding - I see that Birmingham RO says:

"Where ever possible for family tree research, we will provide a digital scan of the original register entry. This means that you get an exact copy of the original registration and your ancestors signature or mark."
