Using what you had found, LindaB, ie that there was a marriage in 1887 I put the name 'Ellerton' in on FreeBMD for 1887 with the phonetic search on and could see that there were no marriages for Jun Qtr 1887. So then I thought I would look on Ancestry for marriages in that quarter for Ellerton/Hallmark. To do this I put in a surname to get me near to the name Ellerton in this instance 'Elk*' and I was fortunate it came up with the surname Elizabeth Elkerton who married in Jun Qtr. I then clicked on the image for this marriage and Sarah A Ellerton was on that page (often you have to click forward or backwards to get to the surname you are looking for). I then did the same thing for Aaron Hallmark.

Sometimes it's not as easy as this but if you click on an image for the year you are looking for and at the top of the page on the left hand side you will see 'Return to Record' and alongside that you have the year, quarter and the initial you are looking at.
If you click on the quarter it gives you the choice of all the quarters in that year. You then click on the quarter you are looking for and then click on the first letter of the surname you are looking for this then brings up the images and it is a matter of scrolling through the surnames until you reach the surname you are looking for; a bit laborious but sometimes you find things that haven't been transcribed and it's worth all the effort. Hope this makes sense?

The above also works for Births and Deaths.

The ref shown against the marriage in Staffs BMD is not the GRO ref but looks suspiciously like a date to me 21.6.1887? Enough to apply to GRO for?

It looks as though FreeBMD has not transcribed Jun Qtr 1887..... just looked at the actual register and have found Sarah A as follows:

Jun Qtr 1887
Ellerton Sarah A Newcastle L Vol 6b Page 102

Just going to make sure there is a corresponding entry for Aaron
