Evans in Wales!

Hello everyone :)

The 1854 cert arrived today - interestingly, there is no father listed! Just his mother Margaret Evans...

This obviously doesn't help the situation! Obviously, he may have been lying about his father as they often did, but that doesn't help me!!

Any suggestions?

I've had a Stephen Stephens! :S

And thats quite interesting! I'd never realised there were only 2 in Swansea itself during those years...

I think I'll order the 1854..see what happens..

Thanks :)

Just in case, tried wider search on Freebmd and not too bad:

Births Dec 1852 (>99%)
Evans Daniel Swansea 11a 394
Evans Daniel Swansea 11a 375
Births Mar 1854 (>99%)
Evans Daniel Swansea 11a 423
Births Sep 1855 (>99%)
Evans Daniel Swansea 11a 429
Births Jun 1856 (>99%)
EVANS Daniel Swansea 11a 527
Births Dec 1856 (>99%)
Evans Daniel Swansea 11a 476

If you want it enough you could risk the 1854 one.

brummiejan Report 27 Apr 2010 15:18

Well, could be worse - could be David, Thomas or God forbid Evan Evans!!
Interestingly, there are only 2 births 1853-55:

Births Mar 1854 (>99%)
Evans Daniel Swansea 11a 423
Births Sep 1855 (>99%)
Evans Daniel Swansea 11a 429

Sorry! For some reason I looked at the Thomas instead of the Daniel! I was thinking it was 5 years out..oh dears..I need some sleep!

Clare, a bit of advice here! I don't know if the above is your Daniel or not, but you can't dismiss a finding because of a birth year discrepancy of just one year. Five years more like! Even if the information is spot on, the age depends on census night on when the birthday was. And our forebears were a lot more flexible with their ages!"

Hmm, I wish it were that one! But Thomas was almost definately born c. 1854...

And yes they're terrible for popular and common names! The rest of my family are really unusal names as well!

Thanks

Wrong place this time - but correct occupation for father! It does fall within Swansea though.

Hi Jan,

Yes I'd seen that one and ruled it out because he was 20 when he got married. And actually, the address I mentioned is from their son's birth cert..sorry I got confused with them both in front of me :S

There actually isn't an address on the marriage cert..just Swansea, Glamorgan.

Thanks,

Clare

Witnesses were Benjamin Harris (her family) and what looks like David Williams.

Possible?? Birth year might rule it out tho:

EDIT most unlikely, Thomas is a tailor!!

Clare, you haven't given Daniel's father's name. Might help to know witnesses too.

Hello

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I've been unwell.

Daniel's father was also a coal miner, but I can't make out the address. It appears to start with 'Cwm' as in Welsh for Valley, but I could be wrong as the writing is quite hard to read.

Thanks for everyone's help,

Clare

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to track someone down with such a common name in this area! I'm really stuck!

I'm looking for Daniel Evans born c. 1854 (however, in 1891 he's down as being born in 1859..but I think this is wrong as he got married in 1874). He was born in Glamorgan, possibly Swansea itself.

Here he is in 1891 with his wife and children;

Name: Daniele Evans
Age: 32
Estimated birth year: abt 1859
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Lucy
Gender: Male
Where born: Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales

Civil parish: Loughor
Ecclesiastical parish: St John
Town: Gowerton
County/Island: Glamorgan
Country: Wales

Children Philip Myrddin (down as P M) and Agnes Evans
His father is Thomas Evans (according to his marriage certificate)

He was a steel worker in 1891 and a Coal miner in 1881.
He married his wife, Lucy Rosser, in Dec 1874 in Swansea.

There are so many Daniel Evanses in the area in 1871 and before that I can't pinpoint him until he is married (I have his sons birth certificate which got me this far!)

I don't know where to go next! Any suggestions/experience?

Much appreciated

Clare
