If he was in the RN he should appear in censuses as RN ships were considered Uk Territory but if in the Merchant service I am afraid he will not appear if at sea

Its nearly midnight here and I have to go to bed and try digesting this.There are so many Ann's and Isabella's in this family .I've only just got over a lot of Sarah Ann's in the last part of my tree.Thanks for your help , any more info is greatly appreciated. Is there any way I can find out the type of seaman George Giles was or what ships he served on, could he have been in the royal navy or whatever they were called then?

Yes I do think Isabella is the right one as everything else fits datewise and with info in marriages etc.Bear in mind that not many people could read and write in such areas at that time and the info was gatherred by an enumerator at the door so the odd inconsistencies are frequent

Eliza was second wife to William after Ann died
Ratcliff and stepney are pretty much the same area inEast London You oftn get slight variations in places of birth where they are close together

Me again I understood that Isabella RuttleyMother AnnGiles was born in Stepney with middle names Sarah Ann Do you think this Isabella A born in Limehouse is the same one?

Hi ,do you mean that the 1851 census is listing Ann aged 9.but her sister Isabella is the one born in Ratcliff. I am in Australia. Do you know how close Ratcliff and Stepney are?

There is a boarder named Jane Bronne 29 Tailoress b Limehouse (image hard to read but could be Bruce?)

Hi thanks for the help, all the info I had came from other helpers on this site.it looks like you have found the right Ann Bruce.I am a novice on computers what is a pm and how do I send it to you Joan? Is there any chance of finding siblings for Isabella or any more info on the Bruces?

The marriage is shown on Ancestry as on 31/5/1886 at Christchurch Southwark,Tom John Ruttley is 33 widower and Isabella is 21 daughter of George Giles Deceased Sailor

George Giles batch. and Ann Bruce spinster
Occupation of groom mariner
No occupation for bride.
Grooms father Charles Giles Deceased
Brides father William Bruce (occupation unreadable)
both families were living 50, Wellington Place Stepney.

On the original the mother is named as Isabella Ann but then the Isabella has been crossed out.

Isabella Sarah Ann Giles was born 19/12/1865.and married Tom J Ruttley on 31/5/1886.Her father was George Andrew Giles ,seaman .Her mother was Ann or Isabella Ann. Family rumour has her maiden name as Bruce.Can anyone find any info on this Bruce idea please.Regards Lynda
