Has anyone come across the name Bulwer or Bulliver as a first name? My Dymock/Dimmock/Denmark family on the 1841 census shows him as the child of Elizabeth and Harvey Dymock, aged 11.

The family had a son of the right age (Henry Lytton) born in 1830, and he is not present on the census form. I know that he survived and have his marriage and children, but there is no sighting anywhere else of anyone called Bulliver/Bulwer.

I have 'assumed' that they are one and the same, but cannot find a reason for the difference. Can anyone shed any light on this puzzle please?

Hello everyone,

I did send a thank you yesterday, but it appears not to have got through.
So, again, thank you to everyone who responded, It seems that it could be a nickname for Henry, though I don't understand why, but then I haven't come to any conclusion about the middle name Lytton; surely unusual in the family of an ag.lab?

Anyway, once again, many thanks for your kind help.

Wasn't there an author (or perhaps poet or society figure ?) called Bulwer Lytton? Its ringing bells - probably should have Googled it before replying here!

Hi Christine

That's very interesting, and could explain the two names in the DImmock/Denmark line. However, I doubt that the parents were readers of his, since neither of them could write their names! However, it does make me wonder whether, as an Ag Lab, the father Harvey may have worked on the Bulwer-Lytton estate. That is the only reasonable deduction I can make, and I certainly have no proof of its veracity.

I'm being enlighted and educated at the same time......such fun!

Thanks again.

Christine has asked me to post what I know of Henry Lytton Denmark:

Parents: Harvey & Elizabeth Dymock/Denmark (nee Adams
Born: Hertford, Bap. 18 Jul 1830
Census: 1851 recorded as Bulwer (I believe), Hertford
Census: 1861 not found
Marriage: 29 May 1866 at St Pancras, Old Church to
Frances Olivia Stephens (born 1839, Cambridge).
Census: 1871 at Church Street, St Nicholas Deptford with Frances and children Henry (5), Sarah (2) and Charles (8 months)
Occupation:Baker
Census: 1881 Frances (Widow) Occupation: Biscuit Baker. 12 Hotham Street, West Ham, Essex
Henry 15 Occupation: Biscuit Baker
Sarah 12 Scholar
Frances 9 Scholar
Mary 7 (born Calais, France)
John 3. There is no Charles on this census.
Census: 1891 11 Cross Street, West Ham, Stratford
Frances (Widow) Occupation: Pastry Cook.
Frances, Henry, Sarah - all Pastry Cook's Assistants, all still single, John is still a scholar
Census 1901 Frances (Widow) Henry and John are Pastrycook/Breadmakers, Sarah and Mary have no occupation. All are still single.
I am unable to find any of them in the 1911 census, but of course the girls may have married by then.
I know that wife Frances died in 1920, so she should be on the census. At the moment, I can't add any further information to this.

Thanks to everyone
Pauline

Thank you, LadyKira,

More information for me to work on! I should like to add that since receiving such a lot of help from Members, my fascination with FH has been revived considerably. The only thing is, I haven't managed to find the extra hours I need to pursue everything further..........
