James leader or Lader was born July 1847 in Wroughton Wiltshire but can I find his birth record , NO. I have tried every which way. The first piece of evidence I have on him was on his military records (enlistment)of May 1867. He enlisted under the surname Lader, married under the surname Lader, but his 11 children were registered under the surname Leader, including my grandad George. |

That is one and the same person. James married Emma Martha Moore, I have their marriage certificate. Their first son was William James, The census surname changes between Lader and Leader |

I will follow this up, , Loader is a possibility, although James always said he came from Wiltshire and there are LEADERS fron that area, but anything is possible. I have recently requested a death certificate on what I believe to be his. Thank you |

No penalty until 1875 for NOT registering births - may simply not have been registered |

Thank you for that information, it is very helpful and could make sense as to why I cannot find him!! I would like to know if he had any siblings though. |
