I need to search non catholic church parish records for 1861 in the LURGAN Co Down area, there are so many church's on line and it is impossible to find how old they are. If anyone has any idea of what church's would have been in and around Lurgan in 1861. I am trying to trace the birth of my Grandfather James Semple born in that area in 1861
his father was John & his mother was Mary
Many Thanks
James Semple

Lurgan is in Co Armagh, the Shankill parish church C.O.I. is the oldest in the centre of Lurgan

James...
What evidence do you have he was Born/Baptised "Lurgan" and Co Down ".As Maura has noted Lurgan is in the Co Armagh
However there were dozens of Semple and Malcolmson in the Co Down...

I have his Army papers, showing birth Lurgan Co Down. He enlisted in Belfast June 1865 aged 14 givinig his date of birth as 1861 ish. Sometime ago I was told that in the middle 1800s part of Lurgan was in co Down
Take care

Eringobragh1916 Report 31 Mar 2010 16:32

James..The info.you were given is correct in so much as the Poor Law Union of Lurgan covered 76 townland areas in the Barony of Iveagh Upper Part in the Co Down and also covered 176 Townlands in the Barony of Oneilland East and West in the Co Armagh...
"Lurgan Town" was and is in the Co Armagh....
The problem you are going to have is find out which Townland !!!
Have you any other family names which may assist...anything at all may help.
Were either family Quakers...?

Hi Eringobragh,
Many thanks for info, sorry to say that i have no other family names, I started with nothing all i was given to understand that my grandfather was a soldier, I applied for all the army records for the name of Semple from Co Down & Co Armagh, army discharge papers always show your forwarding address on discharge, and the address on one set of army papers was the same address given on grandfathers marriage certificate, and so I knew I had the correct name, one uncle said grandfather was a staunch Orangeman, alas that's all I know
Regards
Jim

James what was your grandmother's name, if you have their marriage cert does it not say the church were they were married in, they may have came from the same parish.

James

James Report 2 Apr 2010 09:36

The 2 main non catholic churches that I can find marriages for the name Semple in the Lurgan area are the Shankill C.O.I. and Magheralin C.O.I.

Eringobragh1916 Report 2 Apr 2010 14:07

James...
Going back to the Army Papers if he shows aged 14 on Enlistment (1864) then surely we are looking 1851 or earlier...?
It would help if you gave Marriage date and date of his death if you have it...
Have you located him on any Census in UK....

James

James Report 2 Apr 2010 15:52

Maura,
Thanks for that will add it to my file. If I write to just Shankill C.O.I Shankill N. Ireland will that suffice as an address
Talk later
