Looking For Info On Brockhall Hospital 1949-1960s

Hi.
A friend of mine has asked me to do some research for her on the history of Brockhall Hospital, Lancashire from 1949-1960s. The hospital was formerly known as Brockhall Hospital For The Mentally Subnormal, and Brockhall Hospital For Mentally Handicapped People. Her mother was apparently a patient there for a bit and my friend is interested in whether there are any books/pictures/films about the hospital. Also, are the any websites/addresses that may have more information on this subject that you could suggest? Thanks!

Lancashire Records Office at Preston may be able to help here. I had a Great Aunt who died in Whittingham mental hospital near Preston in the early 1940s and Lancashire record office provided me with information on her. I did however have to pay a fee, but they only charged me when they knew they had information to give me.

I did voluntary work at Brockhall Hospital in the mid 1970s, this was encouraged in our school (St Wilfrids C/E Blackburn) we used to get picked up in a mini bus and dropped back in Blackburn in a mini bus.

Conditions there were very basic. I would say it was very much an institution.

Best wishes,
Karen
