William is listed as a servant to the head of the household (who is a famer of 155 acres), unmarried, Farm Waggoner.

John James is listed as servant , unmarried, Horse??? Boy.

Hi Marion...Yes it is the 1871 census that you looked up, but the entry for John James has been mistranscribed. On the image it states his relationship to the head of the household as 'servant' not 'son'.

I do agree with you that this William Oliver is most likely the same man that later married John's mother, Betsey, and became John's stepfather.
