Censuses in America are taken in years ending in 0, so there is a 1910 census. I don't know whether they would have taken the census on the Island as people were just passing through.
Arrivals at Ellis Island are on this site. You have to register but it's free.

Hello Margaret,
I don`t think this person Arthur Gater would be on the 1910 Census
as he did not arrive in Ellis Island until 30 Oct 1910,but thankyou
for the offer..

I had looked at it on the Ellis Island site for a previous thread but the poster had said that he/she had the Ellis Island record.
It says he was 28, a cycle finisher from Birmingham. Nearest relative or friend there was friend Mr. O. Stevenson, 170 Farm St., Birmingham. he was heading to Bloomfield, New Jersey to join Brother-in-law Mr. H. Driver, 55 Myrtle St.

Hi margaret,
Sorry i am late in answering your message,i am doing this for friends
of mine,it was his Greatgrandfather who went to Ellis Island. He is so
pleased about it.
It also says 15 years, does that mean Arthur had been before.
Sorry i am not very good at this.
I really must thankyou for all the help you have given me.

I took it to mean that the Arthur Gater listed on that manifest had lived in the US for 15 years at some point previous to his 1910 entry through Ellis Island.

The question, is it the Alfred Gater that you have been lookign for? << oops sorry, meant Arthur!

It says he is going to his brother-in-law, Mr H Driver in Bloomfield, NJ

You could try to see if you could find an English marriage for an H Driver to a Gater, to see if that links up with anything else you know about Alfred.

You could ask if someone could look up an earlier US census to see if Alfred is on there <<<<<< oops! Arthur again!!!

BUT do that on this thread so that everyone can see what has been found. Don't, please, sart another thread!!

Just click edit on your original message, and that will allow you to change the title to something like 1900/1890 census for US

Most of the 1890 American census was destroyed in a fire, There's an Arthur E. Gater on the 1900 census but he was born March 1875, Canada (England) That's what it says! He's with family, parents Silas R. and Mary H. and siblings Charles C., Silas P., George W., Alice M. and William R.
Arthur was a life insurance cashier.

Hello Margaret,
Thankyou for looking for me,i really don`t know if that is Arthur.
He put down he was single but he was married.
He married Beatrice Foley in 1898.
They are on the English 1901 census.
Beatrice and Children were on the 1911 Census living in Farm Street
Arthur had been added but crossed out and America had been put on.
I will have to ask my friends to get Arthur and Beatrice`s Marriage
certificate to see who is father was.
I have tried to find a Gater married to H,Driver in England but i can`t find one.
I wonder if Arthur was born in America.

It's interesting.

he doesn't seem t have any back history either!

There are 4 or 5 Arthur Gater's born 1880 +/- 5 years

Only one says he was born in Warwickshire ..... and that is this guy on the 1901.

Only 1 says he was born in Birmingham .............. this guy on the 1901.

I wonder how many piggies he was telling??????????????????

I have been looking for Arthur Gater and found him on passenger List
in 1910 going to Ellis Island,he lived there before for 15years.
Arthur married in 1898 in Birmingham.Uk.
I have now found his Father`s name which is Frederick Gater and he was
a Plumber. But cannot find him in Birmingham.
If someone could look up Frederick Gater for me in America i would be very grateful.
Thankyou

Ellis Island has an Albert Gater, 31, married, plumber and a Frederick Gater, 21, single, presser arriving 4 Feb.1910 aboard the Mauretania. Relative at home was mother Mrs. Gater, 132 Fuelky? Lane, Burslem. They're heading to Trenton, N.J. to join sister Mrs. Barrett, 28 Michigan Ave., Trenton.

The 1910 census has Albert & Frederick as boarders in the home of Joseph & Mary Barrett and their 3 children plus a sister-in-law, Sarah E. Barlow, all born England.
