Hi Astra,
Yes I have seen this record but I believe (from looking at the previous census) that this Joseph was the son of Jane and James Hayes, which wouldn't match with my Joseph since his fathers name is Joseph.
Thanks Angela

Flick,
At this point, I cannot assume that the older children were not Joseph's, he is just not recorded as the father. I have located Sarah M and Thomas R and Margaret Ann in previous census living with her father James. Joseph's status on his marriage cert (as previously mentioned) is bachelor. But as you know this cannot be assumed to be true if he was married previously and not widowed. The witnesses of the marriage were John Wright and Ann Gore Rillond (?) Angela

Hi Flick,
Yes that is the correct marriage. Margaret is recorded as a spinster. The parents of Sarah Matilda and Thomas Robert are Margaret and an unknown father. At this point I have no clue what becomes of them. Sarah is not listed in the 1911 census but Thomas is, but this part of the tree is a whole other mystery!
Thanks Angela

IF - and it is only IF - Joseph was illegitimate, the info about his father could have been for the sake of propriety
Who were the witnesses to the marriage?

Hi Flick,
Ok this is where it gets more complicated. I have the birth cert for Denis Hayes (my great grandfather). He was registered as a Hussey (not Hayes). No father is listed on the cert, or of two of his siblings (which I have also bought). However more children were born in the marriage between Joseph and Margaret Ann which is why I am still interested in Joseph. I can't rule out that Joseph wasn't Denis' father even though he wasn't listed on his birth cert, he could have been married to another woman! In the 1901 census the 3 illegitimate children were all listed as Hayes'. Also Denis records Joseph as his father on his marriage cert. I also appreciate that he might not know any different. Thanks Angela

Who, then, were the parents of Sarah and Thomas?
Was Margaret a spinster when she married?

Hi PollyPoppet,
Unfortunately I don't believe these records are the Joseph I am looking for since Joseph's father is Joseph Hayes (as stated on his marriage cert). Thanks Angela

Hi Flick,
Joseph was a coal miner. The marriage cert that I have is that of Joseph himself to Mary Ann Hussey in 1896 at Wign registrar office. On his marriage cert he is recorded as a bachelor, but I know this should not be taken as certain. The father is named as Joseph Hayes and is also a coal miner.
Thanks Angela

There is this Joseph with mother Jane who has re-married and is now a Topping. There is a possible marriage of a Joseph Hayes to a Jane Latchford.

What was the occupation of the Joseph who is your ancestor? Have you considered buying the birth cert of the child who is your direct line?

Hi PollyPoppet,
Yes this is the correct family. I have also found them in the 1911 census (spelt Hayes). It's just going backwards from 1901 that is proving troublesome :-)
Thanks Angela

Hi Ginny, After a little more searching I can I don't thinkt the census record above that you posted above is the same Jane and Joseph that I have been initially discussing. I did a search on Joseph Hayes' marrying a Jane over a 10 year period. Two results came back, one of which was that to Jane Farrington, the other registered in Blackburn which would tie in with the census record above. Angela

Hi Ginny, Thank you for your response. In the 1901 census, I know I have the right Joseph as his son Denis (my great grandfather) is living with them (spelt Heyes) and I have traced this through to 1911. My problem is trying to locate my Joseph prior to 1901, and I was wondering if he was the one married to Jane Farrington. A Joseph Hayes definitely married a Jane Farrington in 1886 but whether it is the same Joseph Hayes that is married to the Jane in the record you posted I am unsure. Angela

Just re-read your post and are you saying that you are not sure if Joseph married Jane Farrington?
If there are 2 Josephs with similar birth details how do you know you have the correct one?
