Thanks ever so much for your help,I'm pretty new to this ancestry business and didn't realise that there were mistakes made in the census records, I now see that I really have to double check names and variations in surname spellings ,I also never thought to check addresses over the ten years in between the census.Once again you have been a great help , and if its ok with you , If I get stuck again I,ll be in touch.

I think lots of mistakes can be made in census records. I have written down what someone was telling me and realised I have totally got it wrong. The enumerator might have misheard. The record is just a copy of someone else's work. The person might have used 2 different christian names, depending on whim - one of my uncles changed his name because he did not like it - this was in his 50's.
Therefore, you have to look at balance of probabilities, and accept that nothing can be proved 100%.

Just out of curiosity is it possible that a mistake could have been made on the census record, where they have the fathers name as George and not John.I ask this because on Franks/Francis's marriage certificate there is a witness called Hannah Bailey the same name as the sister on the 1881 census. What do you think? Thanks

I've found a death record of sarah podd in 1855,perhaps this is my sarah podd's mother. Also have a marriage record for a Humphrey Podd in 1857.Any ideas on how I could find a marriage between Sarah Podd and John Bailey,I've tried several methods to no avail.I know that they are definitely Francis Baileys parents but jusy cannot connect the two together

This could be Sarah Podd in 1851:
1851 England Census
Sarah Codd Age: 2 Estimated birth year: abt 1849 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: Humphrey Mother's Name: Sarah Gender: Female Where born: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
Civil parish: Nether Hallam Ecclesiastical parish: St Philip
County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England
Street Address: Hill Foot
Registration district: Ecclesall Bierlow Sub-registration district: Nether Hallam ED, institution, or vessel: 6
Household schedule number: 63
Humphrey Codd 43 Labourer Chelsea Pensioner Hadleigh, Suffolk
Sarah Codd 39 Long Buckby, Northamptonshire
Sarah Codd 2
Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2336; Folio: 128; Page: 18; GSU roll: 87583-87584.

But Sarah is not with him in 1861, when he is under the name Podd , but has a new wife, which could explain Sarah being elsewhere.

Francis was born at Hicks lane Sheffield 1872 under the name Frank also his death certificate states him as Frank but on his marriage to Sarah Lowther he was Francis. He was living at 4 stepney street in 1891 the home of sarah Lowther.I can't find any census records of him prior to 1891 so am unable to connect him to sarah(Podd) and John his parents.I have already found the birth record of sarah in 1848 but cannot be sure that it is the right one without finding a marriage between her and John Bailey.

There's no marriage of a Sarah Podd to a Bailey on FreeBMD. Was it before 1837?
