Hello Darren,
It is nearly a year since your original post so you may already have the information you have need, if not maybe I can give you another search point.
If the father was serving with the Grenadier Guards at the time of his son's birth, in Wellington Barracksand with the rank of private, he would be a volunteer and the regiment would have his enlistment details. If he died in battle, eg the Crimean or Canada campaign (1861-1864) his name would be on a Roll of Honour.
You could make enquiries to the Regimental Archivist, RHQ Grenadier Guards, Wellington Barracks, Birdcage Walk, Westminster, London SW1E-6HQ.
An enquiry will cost you 30 pounds but it might be worthwhile.
