I have an american friend whose finding it difficult to research her family line in uk.She has access to USA web for geneology.
She tells me her grandparents came to Britain/London around 1895.Prior to that they had lived in Lithoania(apologies for dire spelling) and were eastern european Russian Jews.
The Whitechapel area was of some significance as it was where they resided once in uk.
The surname is very unusal and her way of spelling is SCOLNIK which means scolar in Hebrew but like alot of names they get altered and changed over time mainly because of illiteracy or the new home country couldnt spell it or pronounce it correctly.
If anyone has any info we would be really grateful.
I realise its a long shot but hey worth a stab in the dark I guess.
Thanx-ever-so

Thankyou so much to those of you that found out so much on this Family-looks very promising indeed.I notice the surname has altered slightly although doesnt come as a surprise as Im aware quite a few Jews from the netherlands changed their surnames for ease when they arrived in Uk.

Ive printed off the ifo will scan to a file and email her with your findings.

Once again thank you so much to all you researchers shes going to be chuffed to pieces.

So this is almost definitely your friends family.
The 1911 I posted is 20 years older.

I will see if we can add a bit more.

I cannot find them on 1911.

I do recall that there is a site specialising in Jewish genealogy but cannot remember the name.

GREaT NEWS-HAVE SCANNED TO FILE TH DATA YOU KINDLY RESEARCHED.
My friend confirmed the Israel & Charney must be the correct family as she said Bella and Bessa were her Auntys she was interested to find out her grandfather had not be born at this time.

She is gob smacked at the info you managed to come up with so quickly.

Ive tried looking at the census for them 1901 to view the actual page but doesnt come up for some reason.

How Ironic though that my friend has settled in France now and married a French chap who is a "EBENIST" which in french is a cabinet maker and a pretty damned good one at that and that was the job of her great grandfather.

Thanx ever-so once again.

So who was her grand father? That may help me find them 1911.

Alysoun Report 21 Feb 2010 13:30

Have found Jewish Genealogical society have emailed info to friend and awaiting her grandfathers name also.

They must have called Bessa the name Betty but aware some brits even were called by their middle names during 1900`s and later for what reason I have no idea.
Again no surprise as Betty doesnt really sound Jewish perhaps they hoped the children would intergrate more with British names.

Too many coincidences for this not to be the right family.

Elizabeth is a jewish name though.
