That's all 'hear say'...... as you've been advised, you need to buy the certificate or you are just chasing your butt

I don't have the marriage certificate, my research has been solely from information from my parents. They have always said, "There was a mistake with the surname on the marriage certificate for Fred & Matlida"

My dad was know as "Hills" but joked about the possibility that his real surname could be "Hill"

Battenburg Report 17 Feb 2010 20:16

Kim you need to get the marriage cert to get his age and fathers name and occupation or everything is speculation. It will also help you to go further back and find relatives on the 1911 census

Kim your now telling us you don;t have the marriage cert to Matilda??

...but your opening post stated

"He was married to Matilda Wilkins and had one son Charles.
On their marriage certificate he may have been Hill, we're not sure if this was a mistake or not."

So who's marriage cert are you referring to?

Kim Report 17 Feb 2010 19:59

I don't know Fredericks father, all I knew of him was his name and guessed his age. I've not seen any certificates and both my nan and dad have died.
My dads cousin has told me that they were gipsyies in the family but, I was not sure whose side? my nan's or grandads, could be both of them were?

So I can't tell you about Fredericks parents although they may have been shop Owners possibly in the green grocer trade. I'm sure I remember my mum talking of a shop in London. The area'a mentioned are all correct... Deptford... St Pancras...

I remmeber my nan living in a flat in Deptford., then later she moved to Brockley where she died.

Kim Report 17 Feb 2010 19:41

Thanks Tania, I never knew my nans mothers maiden name. I think frederick died in England but as I said my dad has no idea what happen to him.

Kim

Kim Report 17 Feb 2010 19:37

Thats the odd thing, he seemed to just vanish when he was about 35yrs.
As far as my dad was concerned he probably died on the streets, so I began to wonder if he ever did marry my nan.

Ginny & Tania thank you, yes his middle name was Joseph and his son was Charles. I'm still taking all you info in so thanks.

Astra I don't know of any later family members.

Liz I've tried to use the ansestry site to search records and failed, when I joined I was only able to visit American records so cancelled. I have been able to get some info free but after a while I was locked out.

Please don't delete info as I may refer back to it and Thank you

According to her message on another thread the family could have been Romanies. Which means they could have been born anywhere in the country and even married extremely young. I will wait for the OP to come back with some more information and then you can feel free to cyber slap me Ginny if you are right!

Astra Report 17 Feb 2010 19:12

The birth and marriage details would mean that he was married when he was 14-15.
Can you give us his fathers name and occupation from the marriage certificate and Fredericks age please. The names of the witnesses may also be useful.
