Hope I'm putting this on the right board. Wondering if anybody can help me find out who built the market cross in Askrigg, Wensleydale. I'm researching my family tree and believe it could have been built by Leonard Heseltine in 1830's. A book (Yorkshire Village by Marie Hartley, Publisher Dent, cites Leonard Heseltine “an Askrigg man as building it). There were a few Leonard Heseltines around this time. Can anybody tell me which records do I need to search in order to verify this. Any help at all will be very welcome. Thank you. Chris

thanks to all those who have replied and tried to help with this.
Yesterday I found that Hawes museum has records of money paid to Leonard on a/c of new cross, so I'm happy to find an actual record exists.
Dave, thanks for your input, I had only yesterday found the Nappa Hall "Four men of Askrigg" article and noticed the date. I even emailed them, but unfortunately the email bounced straight back. I thought with their vast knowlege of Metcalfe history they may have been able to help.

Ann, looks like my precious message is floating around cyber space somewhere as it's never appeared.
Thank you for the info. I was particularly interested in the LEONARD HESLETINE Pedigree Male -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: 20 MAR 1725 Aysgarth, Yorkshire, England -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: MICH HESLETINE Family
as I don't think I have this anywhere in my records as far as I can see. I have a Leonard Heseltine born 1698 living at Riddings, Thoralby when his first child was born 1722. but have not been able to go back further than 1698 therefore a christening of 1725 could mean parents going back before that date possibly. I would dearly love to know if any records exist for Mich Heseltine and family especially if I could tie them in to Leonard Heseltine (1698) or The Riddings at Thoralby.
The pub thing, yes we seem to have lots of ancestors who were innkeepers, even my own grandad Heseltine was landlord of two public house. Must be in the genes lol. regards Chris

Ann It's possible that this Michael could be the brother of Leonard (b1725) born 10 years apart., both have the father as Michael.
Is there any information on Michael and Mary the parents before 1725 thanks for your help. Chris
