Find Ancestors

Hello. I'm DESPERATE for a look up at the Camden Local Studies and Archive Centre (Holborn Library). I've been in touch via email but have been told they can't do 'look ups' online.

I need a look up in the Electoral Rolls for 1927. The address is 16 Gloucester Road, Regents Park, and the date I have is 11th October 1927.

It was a case of 'we don't do that sort of research for members of the public and I'd have to go and have a look myself'. I'd be happy to pay a search fee if it meant I could get the info! It's just not that easy to get to London with two small children!!

In a nutshell, I'm trying to find my Nan's father's family (as she never knew who they were), but her mother once received a letter from a 'M Hazel', which I have. I'm presuming this is my Nan's aunt as she refers to Nan's father as 'my brother'. i don't know what the 'M' stands for though....

I'm hoping the electoral roll will give the full names of all the occupants of that address at that time so I can piece this side of the family together and maybe find some living relatives for my Nan. (Here's hoping!!)

Thanks very much but I've put endless threads on the 'trying to find' board but no luck! The problem is my Nan's father was such a rogue! He kept leaving the family and had to be brought back countless time by the police before he disappeared for good at the beginning of WW2. Nan's mother never met any of his family, never knew any names, where he was originally from etc. We have no birth cert for him; not even sure of his year of birth......! The only link we have is this letter from his 'sister'....

Maybe I'll try mailing the library again and offer money!!

Oh no; I completely understand that they can't offer these sorts of searches free by email; I'd be very happy to pay. But I was told to go up there which is a bit more tricky! Was just hoping someone on here lives in the area and goes to the library....

What was your nans fathers name ??.

His name was Frederick Nicholls. I'm afraid I don't have hardly any info on him though.

He was known to be living in Devon although he 'claimed' to be from Gloucestershire. (I ordered several birth certs but none were him).

On his marriage cert (the only doc we have), he gives his age as 29 (August 1925) although his bride gave her age as 21 and she was actually 17, so this may also be wrong.

His occupation was Bricklayer and he gave his father's name as William Henry Nicholls (deceased), House Builder.

That's all I have....

He married Ethelyn Dulcie Rowe on 17th Aug 1925 at Totnes Registry Office in Devon. The witnesses were Percy M Chaddock and Elsie Chaddock. I have no idea who these people were as the surname is not a family name.

Ethelyn already had a seven month old daughter at the time of marriage (father unknown; not Frederick) and was pregnant with another. Also, my Nan said her mother's family didn't wholly approve of the marriage so it may be that no family attended the 'wedding' and the Chaddocks were work colleagues or even strangers.

My Nan was never aware of any family members of her fathers being around; he never talked about them. It wasn't until her mother died and she went through her papers that she found this letter.....the plot thickens!!

According to Freebmd, she used her second name as her first, with a slight variation "DUNCIA" E Rowe.

Yep, this is her in 1911. Her parents were Frederick and Ethel Rowe (nee Body) and her younger brother here is Frederick Horace Rowe. She had two more siblings later on.

She was registered at birth as Ethelyn Dulcie but her marriage cert was Dulcie Ethelyn and she always went by the name Dulcie.

BTW, I sent a pleading mail to Camden and had a lovely reply saying they don't 'usually' do these sorts of searches online but he had a look for me and the names of the people at the address were Charles and Agnes Canton. I did a quick search on the census records and it shows he was a Dentist and on some of them he had servants so it's possible 'M Hazel' was working for him.... So annoying!!!!

Hi!

No, sorry; that's not the right marriage! I know, when I saw it I thought it HAD to be the right one! So I ordered the cert and the father of Mabel was George Nicholls and he was a Railway Engineer.

The siblings of 'Ethelyn' were Frederick Horace (1908), Winifred Robina Mary (1913) and Ivor Wesley (1916).

The children of Frederick and 'Ethelyn' were Dulcia Ethel (1926), Ian Desmond Wesley (1928) and Michael John Reed (1935).

I've tried all variations for a marriage between a Nicholls and a Hazel but can't find one! Of course, her maiden name may not have been Nicholls if they had different fathers. And she may have been married before so the marriage wouldn't have been a Nicholls/Hazel match. OR, M Hazel could be a man??!!

Yeah, I was thinking along those lines too but don't know how to go about it, or if it's possible!!

i had a look at the Telephone directories on Ancestry and there's a business address for him for 1927. Not sure how that information will help though....!!

I've tried looking for marriages between Nicholls and Canton and Hazel and Canton too in case M Hazel was a family member but no luck so far...

Looking at the 1911 census, Charles Canton lived at No 2 Gloucester Road, thought you were after details of 16..

Erm...yes, I was! No.16! That's what the blokey from the library told me! And he also said he did a search for the following year (1928), and still it was Charles and Agnes Canton...! Maybe he moved up the road?? There'a a gap of 17 years so anything's possible!

Are you able to look at who it says for no.16 on the census??
