Tying to find my Grandad's long lost children

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

My Grandad, Tom Robinson born I think in Accrington, Lancashire around 1920-22ish who died in 2002 and was married to Edith Claimann and they had four children, Irene, Margaret, Barbara and Sheila. Well Tom was married before that and he had children by the first marriage and I am keen to find out about my long lost half cousins. If anyone can help I would be most grateful. Thanks.

I think this might be impossible - but let's see what we can do!
Firstly, it seems Accrington came under the registration district of Haslingden. There are 2 births which might be your grandfather:

Births Mar 1921
Robinson Thomas Raby Haslingden 8e 221
Births Sep 1922
Robinson Thomas H Rushton Haslingden 8e 174

If you have any earlier family members, it might help to look and see if anyone else has them in their trees. It's possible you could decide if one of the above is yours by finding his parents' marriage - what was his father's name?

If you know where and roughly when he married before it might be possible to make a calculated guess, but with such a common name this is going to be difficult.

I thought it would be difficult with Robinson being so common. I wish I had more information to give. My estimate of my Nan and Grandad's wedding was 1946 or 7. I think they also divorced around 1969. Thanks for helping

I can't even see your grandparents' wedding record. Are you certain of the names?

Do you know what year any of the children were born?

There are only a few deaths of a Thomas Robinson 2002 given your birth details 1920/22ish are correct.

However.....are you sure you have the correct surname/spelling for Edith, there are no Claimann/Claiman in England/Wales during last census. The most common spelling is Clayman.

Checking with http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ we see that only one of the two births Jan mentioned was in Accrington:

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1920
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
ROBINSON Thomas Accrington Preston RABY ACC/135/69

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1921
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
ROBINSON Thomas H Castleton No 1 Rochdale CNO1/18/394

There is also this birth:

Births Jun 1922 (>99%)
Robinson Tom Robinson Blackburn 8e 624

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1922
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
ROBINSON Tom Oswaldtwistle Preston ROBINSON OS/87/60

At least nowadays, Accrington blends into Oswaldtwistle.

Sorry I should have told you that My Grandma, Edith Claimann is German and she moved to the UK to be with my Grandad.

As Linda asked, do you know what year any of the children were born? -- I'm not sure about Linda, but I'm referring to the children you named in your first post. ;) Or any middle names? Because no Robinson births with mother anything like Claimann are coming up ...

Kleemann is pronounced Clayman. Any chance of that?

Might they have married in Germany?

If it's German then it's more likely to begin with a K.

Found this but don't see the others:

Name: Sheila Robinson
Mother's Maiden Surname: Kleimann

I see she was born in Germany. So I assume the marriage was there too.

Rose, that is in fact what I said.

CLAIMANN could be an anglicization of KLEEMANN because Claimann, pronounced in English, would sound pretty much exactly like Kleemann, pronounced in German (although the "mann" would sound more like "mon" to the English ear).

CLAIMANN just doesn't seem to be a name anywhere.

Edith could also have been Editha.
