AGNES RUTH LARCHE (WHITNEY/WHITING)

Susan-nz Report 21 Jan 2010 05:45

I am past being confused ! I have(had) a great great grandmother Agnes(b.1850c) born in India. I don't have a maiden name. I then have Agnes on the 1871 census living as Agnes Whitney, wife, mother of Louisa Whiting (b.1870c) at The Shaft Barracks, Western Heights Kent. I cannot find her as a Whitney or Whiting. Incidentally a Charles Larche is also shown on the 1871 census at the Shaft Barracks.
Agnes is shown with another daughter, Emma Whiting b.1874 at Isle of Wight, Hampshire. ???
In an 1881 census, Agnes is shown with Charles and as Agnes Larche. They have Louisa and Emma (listed as stepdaughters to Charles) and the first of their own family, Ruth Agnes (1yr- my great grandmother).

What am I missing, why can't I see the link and/or find a first marriage for Agnes. Perhaps she never married with the first two girls. Why then Whitney and Whiting?

I would really appreciate any feedback. Am I missing something obvious?

Thankyou.
Susan

That marriage isn't the one unfortunately.

Agnes Emma Seamons was born in Islington in 1846. You can trace her on the censuses.

this is the link to some India genealogical records on FIBIS (including the marriage of Henry Whiting):

http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_person_search.php

However, when I was looking for a record of my Grandad's birth in Navsari (Bombay), the British Library APAC were a great help and replied to my e-mail within 24hrs:

The Reference Services staff of the Asia, Pacific and Africa Collections at the British Library might be able to help you. Contact:

The British Library do have a few records available to search on-line at:

I hope this helps

ps. I think the first step should be to order the birth cert of Louisa Whiting (Agnes' daughter)

I now have a copy of Louisa's birth. Her father is listed as Henry Whiting, Private 102 Regt.

Agnes is listed as Agnes Whiting, late Murphy, formerly Hayes.

How do I interpret that? Born Murphy, married a Hayes then a Whiting and then Charles Larche? I presume so as a son born to Agnes and Charles lists Agnes as Agnes Larche, formerly Hayes.
Busy lady...

On the Isle of Wight records the birth of Emma Whiting has the names Hayes and Murphy where mother's maiden name would be.

"Late Murphy, formerly Hayes" means her maiden name was Hayes. She must have married a Murphy before she married Henry.
