McAvoy Family

Alison Report 18 Jan 2010 03:31

Trying to find the children of Agnes and Thomas McAvoy. As far as the information I have been given, they had three boys by the names of William, Thomas and Berny, and lived in Bridgeton in Glasgow in the 1930s-1940s. As far as I know Agnes died in an industrial accident round about 1937-8, but this is only a guess. My mother-in-law now 92 years old was Agnes's sister and she still talks about her, but she is not too clear on dates anymore. I would like to find Agnes and Thomas' children and my husband would like to get to know his cousins. If anyone knows where they are could you please contact me through GR. Thanks ever so much.

Agnes was considerably older than your mum?

The big thing - you know Agnes's birth surname (same as your mum's?) and that is essential for identifying her children's births, to get their ages.

A location is also essential. Starting with the country. ;)
-- oops, did you edit, or did I miss the Glasgow reference? (If you edited - best to answer questions by adding a new post, using the purple Reply button.)
-- if you add the location to your subject line you are more likely to get help from people best at helping with Scotland.

There is little to no chance that anyone who knows them will see this message, but lots of people here are good at searching and should be able to locate info about them for you.

Have you tried putting their names into the Search Trees function above??

That will tell you if anyone ahs any of the names in their tree

If so, then you can send them a pm through GR

That's far more likely to get a response than a posting on the boards.

Thank you JaneyCanuck and Sylvia for your interest in my request, I know Agnes' Maiden name was Welsh, as was my mother-in-laws, and I think she was 19 when Agnes died. When I try to get information from her, she refuses to talk about her sister and as far as I can gather my mother-in-law had a nervous breakdown when Agnes died and she seems to have blocked that period out of her mind. I did try to get some more information from her today, but to no result, sorry I can't give you anymore info, but thanks anyway.

Alison

PLEASE try putting the names into Search Trees in the line above these thread

I tried William McAvoy born 1930 +/10 ....... just a guess based on what you said.

I got 19 hits on the name over that 20 year period. The following ones have birthplace in Scotland

William 1940 Port Gkasgow
William 1936 Scotland
William 1931 GLASGOW Lanarkshire Scotland
William 1930 Scotland

William 1929 West Lothian Scotland No Anne Find out more

William 1927 Ayrshire No Gail Find out more

William 1921 Paisley No Julia Find out more

Now ...... these may have nothing whatever to do with you ......... but it's worth a try with the other names!

Aileen Report 19 Jan 2010 10:06

I found the following death record

1942 MCAVOY AGNES WELSH F 28 TOWNHEAD GLASGOW CITY/LANARK

Agnes McAvoy (Flock Mill Worker) married to Thomas McAvoy (Rubber Worker...Gunner Royal Artillery) died 11/12/1942 at Glasgow Royal Infirmary...usual residence...954 London Rd .....aged 28....parents William (Engineers Labourer) and Marjory Welsh ms Goff.
Cause of death ....compound fracture of left radius...fracture in region of left knee joint...gas gangrene and haemolytic streptoccocal septicaemia.

the coroners inquest states ...... whilst engaged in her employment she became entangled in and fell on top of a revolving tub by which she was carried round and whereby sustained the injuries

Aileen

Aileen Report 19 Jan 2010 10:14

this is listing for the marriage

1936 MCAVOY THOMAS WELSH AGNES GOFF GORBALS GLASGOW/LANARK

I cannot view it on-line as marriages can only be viewed if they were before1933. It is also not possible to view births after 1909 and deaths after 1958 so it would be difficult to find anything about the children. If you live in Scotland you can go to the local Registrar's Office and for a fee (mine is £10 for an hour) they will search records for you.

Aileen

Aileen Report 19 Jan 2010 10:27

Probable listing for children

1937 MCAVOY BERNARD M BRIDGETON GLASGOW/GLASGOW
1938 MCAVOY WILLIAM WELSH M GORBALS GLASGOW/LANARK
1940 MCAVOY THOMAS M BRIDGETON GLASGOW/GLASGOW

I checked other trees as Sylvia(in Canada) has done for William.
There are none for Bernard McAvoy and one possible for Thomas although the birth year is wrong so probably not your Thomas

Possible death for Bernard

No Year Surname / Maiden Name Forename Other Surnames Sex Age District City/County/MR
1 1998 MCAVOY BERNARD M 60 BELLSHILL /NORTH LANARKSHIRE

I didn't find death listings for Thomas or William in Scotland

Aileen

Aileen Report 19 Jan 2010 11:20

? Marriages

1959 MCAVOY BERNARD CAMPBELL MARY BOTHWELL /LANARK

1960 MCAVOY WILLIAM WELSH QUINN MARGARET JOSEPH CATHCART (GLASGOW) GLASGOW/LANARK

there are too many possible marriages to guess for Thomas McAvoys

Aileen and once again Sylvia(in Canada) I thank you for all your efforts. I did do a tree search last night and got nowhere, however Aileen you have given me more information in the last number of hours than my mother-in-law has given me in the last 35 years. I knew there was an industrial accident but not the details. My mother-in-law has probably blanked it from her mind as she was so affected by it. Agnes Goff Welsh is definately my aunt in law. It is interesting to know that Bernard McAvoy has passed away, I will continue to ask about William and Thomas thoughout the family, so maybe I will be lucky. We are so scattered now and lost touch during our busy lives, it's such a shame. Once again thank you ever so much for all the effort you have both put in and enlightened us a bit more, we will continue and see what else we can come up with.

Alison.
