I'm trying to find info on my gg grandfather, Thomas Muirhead. I have him in the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, born in Ireland, birth dates given as 1838, 1841 and 1840. He was married to Jane Seddon in 1863. I've been unable to find him in the 1851 or 1861 censuses. His father was William Muirhead but no idea who his mother was.

Hi Rose
I found this and thought it was him because I found a Jane Muirhead living on her own, as head of the family, also in the 1861 census. Then I realised that they only married in 1863 so it couldn't have been her but I guess this still could be Thomas - don't know how to prove it though. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Yes, it's possible he was still in Ireland in 1861. Does anyone know if there are records of Irish people coming to Liverpool - I presume by boat in those days.

I still haven't found the birth of Thomas Muirhead but I have his death in 1903. On the certificate it says he was found drowned in the River Mersey. Does anyone know how I can get hold of a coroner's report.

Thanks

You may find a report of his death in the local newspaper.

If the poor relief records have survived and his wife outlived him, it may be worth checking to see if she claimed relief. I have found, from experience, that the Poor Relief records can prove helpful when tracing Irish ancestors as they often give more detail on the place of birth.
