Can anyone check for John Culshaw and wife Margaret on the 1861 Wigan, Lancs census.
Margaret b.c. 1823 ish, John b.c. 1825 ish.
Her daughter Mary Jane Williams b. 1847 is with the Culshaw family at Little London, but no sign of Margaret.
I have checked the Wigan cemetary records in case she died, but she's not there.
All help much appreciated. Cheers Margaret.

I think that Long Street is actually Longshoot which is not far from St. George's church. Don't know if that helps at all.

Thanks Cynthia for the extra info.
I'll check the Wigan cemetary index see if I can find his burial/interrment, should be listed. They are online with plot numbers that can be accessed to see who else is buried there.
Cheers Margaret, x
PS, I couldn't find them on the 1881 either.

Have been trying to find a birth for 'Meriam'! No success. Tried under Miriam - no success. Then wondered if, because of the local dialect, her name was actually Mary Ann......? There is a Mary Ann Culshaw born in Wigan but it is 1852.......so after the 1851 census. Could she have actually been registered late?

Just another thought. Will have to stop this thinking business!!!

Can I just back track a mo.
If {Mary} Jane Williams b. 1846/7 is on the 1861 census at 4 Little London, Wigan, can someone check to see which Culshaw family she is with. Thought I had this info, but can't find it.
Don't want to be barking up the wrong tree here.
Cheers peeps.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 17 Jan 2010 22:59

OK this is a little strange

Jane Williams is living with her grandfather at 4 Little London. A separate household at 4 Little London is a family of Culshaws ....... the fac tthat they are separate hosueholds is indicated by a single line between the two familes. A separate house would be shown by a double line.

1861 Census

Name: Jane Williams

Oh, no, this throws a spanner in the works.
The Williams family is all correct, but why would this Culshaw be with them. Was only a small house and I was told the Culshaw's were related, that would explain them being there.
Take me months to sort this mystery.
4 Little London is correct. Jane was my grandad's mother, and he was born there.
Would next door neighbours give extra clues?
Thinking cap on, will check my later census's for any Culshaws nearby,
.Thank you Sylvia, much appreciated, must go, it's late here.
Cheers Margaret.

Margaret

economics??????

if the family was very poor, the Williams could well be living in one room in the house and the Culshaws in the rest of the house. Possiby sharing the kitchen, possibly not.

I did reply Sylvia, but my message isn't on. Strange.
That seems very odd indeed.
Where is John Culshaw? Ran off with Margaret?
I have found a previous thread that I put on here, showing the Williams and Culshaw families in 1851.
4 Little London is correct address wise as my grandad was born there. The young Jane was his Mum.
I'll nudge the other thread on the board.
Cheers Margaret.
