You're welcome, and whatever else you come up with, just post it here!
Remember that the marriage info for William and Catherine is still not going to help you unless you have the marriage certificate for _James_ and Margaret Smith showing his father's name and occupation!

William died at the age of 71 on 12/12/1909 was buried at St Marys church Bootle, Liverpool but this was destroyed during the blitz.

Births Sep 1876 (>99%) ?? Garrett James W. Derby 8b 573

Name: William Garrett Age: 54 Estimated birth year: abt 1837 Relation: Head Gender: Male Where born: Liverpool, Lancashire, England Civil parish: Bootle Registration district: West Derby

But the only way to connect all these to _your_ James is his marriage certificate to Margaret Smith, since that is the one definite fact you know.

'First wife was Elizabeth who died at the age of 24.'
well then it looks like he may have been the one I referred to in 1901
Name: James Garrett Age: 25 Estimated birth year: abt 1876 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Elizabeth Gender: Male Where born: Liverpool Civil parish: Kirkdale
James Garrett 25 Elizabeth Garrett 24 James Garrett 2 Ellen Garrett 3 months Thomas Jones 49 Ellen Jones 46 Catherine Jones 13 Thomas Jones 11
I would guess that the Jones-s are Elizabeth's parents.
You don't say where you 'have' 'my grt grand father known as William Garrett brn abt 1838 married Cathrine Murphy' from. Do you have certificates that give all this information? If not, that is what you need to get, no way around it.

That James Garrett in 1881 could be the one born abt 1876 in Liverpool who is married to Elizabeth and living in Kirkdale with young children in 1901.
Valerie if you are reading, does the 1910 U.S. census give an occupation for father James?
Vonnie in another of your posts I saw that you had heard your James might have been born in Isle of Man and in 1901 there is this one:
Name: James M Garrett Age: 22 Estimated birth year: abt 1879 Relation: Brother-in-law Gender: Male Where born: Isle of Man, Isle of Man Civil parish: Everton
Thomas A Coole 29 Isabella Coole 31 Thomas A Coole 5 John M Coole 4 Henry E Coole 2 James M Garrett 22 John E Garrett 19
and this would be him in 1891
Name: James Garrett Age: 16 Estimated birth year: abt 1875 Relation: Son Father's Name: John Mother's Name: Mary Gender: Male Where born: Isle of Man, Isle of Man
Civil parish: Barrow in Furness
John Garrett 42 Mary Garrett 41 John F Garrett 19 William Garrett 18 James Garrett 16 Gertrude Garrett 13 Christina Garrett 8 Meriam Garrett 5 Samuel D Garrett 2
so you really do need that marriage certificate to know who your James's father was.

This looks like it could be your James Garrett in 1881, the birthdate matches the age in the 1910 census Valerie gave, but this is pure guessing unless you know his father's name (and occupation) from his 1903 marriage certificate.
Name: James Garrett Age: 4 Estimated birth year: abt 1877 Relation: Son Father's Name: James Mother's Name: Sarah J. Gender: Male Where born: Liverpool Civil parish: West Derby
James Garrett 26 Sarah J. Garrett 25 James Garrett 4 Mary E. Garrett 6 months Elizabeth Hawley 65 John Kenish 15
Name: James Garrett Age: 26 Estimated birth year: abt 1855 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Sarah J. Gender: Male Where born: Liverpool Occupation: Shipsmith
You're welcome!

Is this your grandparents' marriage?
Marriages Mar 1903 Chambers Mary Alice W. Derby 8b 400 Garrett James W. Derby 8b 400 Roberts Robert W. Derby 8b 400 Smith Margaret W. Derby 8b 400
You said you are looking for James Garrett's brothers and sistes, do you know who they were?
If not you probably need to start with that marriage certificate to get James's father's name and then find him in the 1891 census with his parents and siblings.

Hi Vonnie, I received your private message, please do put your replies in the thread, with the purple 'Reply' button at the top.
sorry if i,m making my self a nuisance i am trying to find my grandfathers (james) brothers & sisters. & how can i get a birth certifate for my dad as he was born in Missouri. many thanks Vonnie
I am no help here because I am not familiar with state records in the United States. But I asked Google for
Missouri "birth certificates"
and it immediately gives the official state site
http://www.dhss.mo.gov/BirthAndDeathRecords/index.html
Unfortunately it says
'Maintaining a central registry of Missouri births, deaths and fetal deaths reported from January 1, 1910 to the present (some delayed filings from births and deaths prior to 1910 are available)'
I would suggest you have a look around that site for its policies about researching and releasing information. If there are records I am sure that if you prove your relationship to your father you would be able to get a copy.

Vonnie can you explain what you are wanting to find out please?
You can find your old threads by clicking on 'My threads' on the left side. You seem to still have the same account, I found this one from 2007 by searching for James Garrett Missouri
