Thanks. I am not discounting your Sarah just because it says born in Manchester as I have already found out that just because later census's said born in Liverpool - that isn't necessarily true!!!

Thanks for the lead!! Jac.

Hi Thanks. I have already learned to not trust places of birth etc as this one is birth place Manchester and my Sarah says Liverpool on later census's. But this isn't always true as we all know. Thanks Jackie.

No sorry it just says spinster and a line through occupation. I found a Sarah in the West Derby Industrial school in 1851 but no idea if actually her.

Hi,
Does it state on Sarahs marriage certificate her occupation?

No joy with this at the moment. I can't even find the birth of Sarah Curtis the daughter. Marriage cert Nov 1863 says 23 yrs old. The Census records all say born in Liverpool but 1839 - 1841 so have tried a bit further either way but still nothing.

Getting late now so will come back to it!!!

Thanks

Hi Folks. Gosh why does work get in the way of Family History research???

A few scenarios to ponder on anyway. I will have a root round to see what comes of all of this.

Thanks.

Wouldn't it be easy if everyone spoke without accents / wrote clearly / didn't give wrong names / or tell porkys about their age?? Oh well - onwards into the breach!!!!

are there any of the children born after 1837 to find a birth cert for?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 23 Dec 2009 16:41

for ref this is the record from lancs opc

Marriage: 14 May 1832 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
John Curtis - Tailor of Liverpool
Unifer Gibbin - Spinster of Liverpool
Married by Banns by: James North Offg. Minister
Register: Marriages 1832 from the Bishop's Transcripts, Page 6, Entry 586
Source: LDS Film 1068891

could it be Jennifer?

might be worth contacting Lancashire records office and asking them to look up the marriage on microfilm

Jackie - the IGI extracted the original parish register, and the extractor read her name as Unifer. The parish register was transcribed for the bishop, and Lancs-OPC read this transcription as Unifer, so there's been two seperate transcriptions of the parish registers, both giving her name as Unifer, so I guess that's what the parish rego really says. What it should have said, who knows?

The film # is:
Marriages, 1829-1834. (Includes index to grooms.) FHL BRITISH Film 93842
so you could rent this and check yourself. To find an FHC where you could view your rental, check the centre col at:

Another thought - Unity ??

Try saying Unifer and Winifred. If she gave her name verbally to the clerk - with perhaps a bit of an accent, or a cold, or adenoids ...

It's reasonably close.

Yes that is why I thought of Winifred but Unifer is a bit of a weird transcription - although if I write Unifer slanted it could be a scribbled Winifred!!!!! Thanks Jackie.

On the 1841 census the John Curtis married to a Winifred.....is a Tailor....maybe the IGI got the brides name wrong unifer.....winifred.

Hi. Only just gone onto this line yesterday as daughters marriage cert arrived with dad's name as John Curtis. Tailor. So am only just embarking on this one! Will keep searching.

1832 was before the official register so may be a problem!

Thanks. Jackie.

Cannot spot Unifer as a forename on FreeBMD.

Do you have the birth cert of one of their children? That would help. It does sound like it's a mistranscription but I can't think of what her name could be.

Winifred is close, but ...

Hi John Curtis married a Miss Gibbin in 1832 in St Nicholas church Liverpool. The extract from Lancs OPC says her name was Unifer but I can only find a Winifred in the later census's. Does anyone have parish records for this period / area who could check for me please? Thanks in advance. Jackie.
