Hello everyone,
Does anybody know why I can't find the 1861 census returns for the Woodstock/Bladon area? I have searched by Enumeration district via Ancestry and can't find it.

Am I going mad, or has it been lost?

I'm researching James Maisey/Mazey/Massey b. Woodstock/ Bladon/Cassington Dec 1851, married Mary Ann Breakspear Mar 1872 and died Sep 1929 (James' & Mary's deaths registered in same month & year).

One thing that confuses me: there are 2 consecutive birth entries on FreeBMD for James Maisey Dec 1851 Woodstock Vol 16 p 150 and Vol 16 p. 151 - are they the same person? I guess only way to find out is via birth certs.

I am trying to prove that James is the son of William Mazey b. Hanborough, Oxon 1815. I have William on all census 1841-1901 except 1861. He and his wife Elizabeth (1816-1859) had 10 children, but they don't all appear together on any one census.

In 1851 William & Elizabeth have Stephen, Elias, Walthan, Sarah and John. On 1871 census Wm. had new wife Jane and 3 sons James, Thomas & Mark. If I could see the 1861 census I could see whether these are the same families.

Wm's occupation (gamekeeper) and birth place/date are consistant in both censuses so I think it highly likely they are the same family. But I'd like to see the children from the 2 censuses together in 1861 to be sure.

Any thoughts would be most welcome.
Thanks
Liz
