Many Thanks Ann for all the information. What I am really after is some sort of official records, perhaps a marriage for Margaret/Eliza, and death records for them all. As both ladies were in their middle ages, I doubt there would have been any birth records.
Again, many thanks

Julia Report 18 Dec 2009 15:20

Good Afternoon Ann of Green Gables. M.........sons shop finaly done and stowed away, so I can now devote my time to this, if you are still up for it.
It is hard to know where to start, and what bits are relavent, and which are not. So, here goes, and if I miss anything out that you feel is important please come back to me, as there are no skeletons in the cupboard, that should be hidden.
I am looking for any official details of two sisters, my Gt.Gt. Aunts, who went to Singapore and Penang, during the period from about 1908-1915.approx.
The first sister was married, so I will give those details first.
Eleanor Annie Turner b. 1866/67, daughter of William Turner b. 1840, in Whittlesey, Cambs.
She married in 1897 to William J.D. Trengrove b. 1874, son of John and Rebecca, and born in Hitchen, Herts.
I have all these parties on the 1881, and subsequent census, so I do not need any more of their details, and although related distantly to the Trengroves that show up in censii, as being in Devon and Cornwall, they are definitely are not the same immediate family
At the time of the marriage of Eleanor Annie and William, he kept a music shop in Whittlesey, and she worked for her aunt, Annie Maria Turner b. 1839.
At sometime during the period 1908-1915, Eleanor Annie and William Trengrove went to Singapore to run a music shop. (More later)
The second sister, whose name on her birth certificate, of which I have a copy, was Margaret Eliza Wells Webster Turner b. 1864, in Gt. Gidding, Hunts. However, by the 1881census, she was called Eliza, though previous censii, had her named as Margaret etc. and she was living in her fathers home in Whittlesey. The mother of the family had died a couple of months before the 1881 census, and some children of the family stayed living in their father's house, and some next door with their aunt Anne Maria. I have all the details of all the family.
After the Trengrove's had been in Singapore for a couple of years, Margaret/Eliza joined them.
A family story, (if to be believed, had her marrying a sea captain, possibly by the surname of Leighton, after she got to Singapore).
William Trengrove was in the Masons when living in Singapore, and I have managed to find that during the early 1920's, both he and Eleanor Annie went to Penang, where once again, he held a 'position' in the Masons
There, the line goes dead, unless I have forgotten something, on all parties, with the exception of the following.
This was told to me by a distant rellie I have found on here, and I have no reason to doubt him, as he is very high up in the church hierarchy.
His grandmother, was another sister of the family, and after losing her husband at quite a young age, was joined by another sister, to bring up her young family. Both ladies corresponded with the sisters in Singapore and Penang, but little paperwork still remains.
He told me that, apart from having a sister of his own, who was named after one of the sisters abroad, the following had happened to Margaret/Eliza.
After the fall of Singapore in 1942, Margaret/Eliza, was offered a safe passage to Australia, by the Japanese. However, the ship she was on, was sunk by the Japanese Navy.
No mention has ever been made of her possible husband, or the Trengroves.
I know this possibly sounds like a scene from Tenko, but they are all the facts that I can bring to mind, as I know them.
I hope this is not too big an ask of you. I go off the boards at about 18.30 each night, but I will be on and off all day during the weekend etc.
Wishing you all the best of luck, but I will perfectly understand if you cannot get very far with this.
Many Thanks
Julia in Derbyshire
