Find Ancestors

Have the same problem trying to find the death for my GtGt Grandfather.

Last found him in 1897 age 75yrs living with his unmarried son.

Down through the years I have spent countless hours in the records office looking for him using various spellings of the name .... likely age ... any location ... etc

It has been suggested that he may have moved away and died elsewhere but can't really see that happening at his age. He's nowhere to be found in the 1901 census in Scotland .... or down in England. Not likely to have moved abroad.

Can't see me solving this ... ever.

I only started searching about three of four years ago when I wanted to find my mum's birth family and everything was computerised in Reg House. The voter roll and valuation rolls are a different story though I have spent many an hour in the library freezing cold searching through the large books waiting for the porters to bring the next lot :0 The things we do!!

Yes, you're right Jackie - it does add to the fun and keep us going!

This is the only case I have found so far where I have been longing for the good old days before computers! I don't know if you remember when, in New Register House, you had to add your name to a list and wait for a porter to escort you to look at the actual registers. I just feel that if I could see the actual register that I could find him as I have a burial date for him!

I'll hopefully find it some day - although I don't know if I will have another 30 years to look for it!!!

I have to admit the Records from the 1800's early 1900's can cause problems like yourself I spent hours in Reg House and online looking for an ancestor finally found him he was transcribed as Mary where image was clearly Henry and noted as female. I found "Marys" birth and did not look too closley at image the first time round so not only was I looking for Henry that I had found on the census I was looking for a Mary that never existed.
It all adds to the fun :)

While I agree that all deaths have to be listed, over the years I have spent a wee fortune on Scotlandspeople and many hours in Register House trying to find the death certificate for my Great Grandfather. I think that he has been "missed" from the indexes. It has been suggested to me that, because his youngest child was born in Ireland, he may have died in Ireland. I can't agree with this as

1. He was still alive when his wife died (in Glasgow) and
2. He is buried in the same lair as her in the same Glasgow cemetery
3. The family could not have had the money to bring his body back to Glasgow for burial if he had died in Ireland.

This is why I suggested to Garry to try looking for burial records as I can now have an approximate date of death for my Great Grandfather. It is still disappointing as he was born and married in Ireland and while I have his father's name, I was hoping to get his mother's name from his death certificate!

After 1855 all deaths had to be registered by law so if he died up here then it would have to be registered in Scotland

Can i ask if he did die in scotland,would there be any reason why his death wouldnt be listed? Did that happen in those days?

I have no reason to beleive that he died else where!

The death of George McCallum with wife Martha Gray is definately not the one you are looking for I checked for a marriage just incase he had remarried but the marriage between this couple took place in 1887 in Perth and he was 22 she was 19

Another way may be to find Mary's burial. You could be lucky and find that she is in a family plot - and George may be there too. If this was the case, you would be able to narrow his death to within a couple of days of the burial.

This is why i'm having problems with My George. The second one was the one i found,with George McCallum and Elizabeth McPhee.

I checked both of them they are not the George I'm trying to find! The one in larbert was the one i thought was him. I suppose he could have died outside scotland.

There is also a John belonging to the OTHER George McCallum born in Balfron in 1865. Looks like the death found belongs to this George McCallum.

8 matches for a death for George McCallum in Scotland between 1901 and 1934 (born c.1864 +/- 5yrs)

2 of the 8 matches died in the county of Stirling ... one in Falkirk and the other in Larbert.

I also found that death with a wife called martha -the problem is there were 2 George McCallums born Balfron within a year of each other and it was the other I found -maybe your George died outside Scotland

I have narrowed it down to one possible match! But the george i found did not have the same wife and it was his brother that witnessed the death. The brothers name was John and i dont or have not yet came accross a john in that family.

You know then that George died between 1901 and 1934.

You know his year of birth - so you can enter that +/- 1 year.

Who was the informant on Mary's death please? What was the address that she died at?

I have Four kids to George and Mary.

Annie b1892,George b1895,Andrew,b1898 and Isabella b1900.

Annie is my direct ancestor and she didnt marry her partner Joseph moorhead b1877 in Carlisle. I cant seem to find any marrage or deaths for the three other kids,And on Scotlands people there is far to many Georege McCallums to try and rule out.

His Wife Mary died on the 25/11/1934 at someones house,She had no fixed abode. When she died it states that she was the Widow of George McCallum out door worker.

Really, if he died in Scotland, then the only place to find his death is Scotlandspeople.

Have you been able to narrow the date any (to reduce the costs!)? If he had children, was he alive when they married? Have you found his wife's death and was she "married to" or "widow of" on the certificate please?

Although you say that he was a traveller, he seems to have more or less remained in the Drymen area.

1871 22 Stirling Street Denny with parents.
1881 Robertsons Houses with parents (a Visitor)
1891 Living in a Tent at Drymen.
19011901 Catter loan Drymen Living with his mother in law and family.

I think he was a travaler,Any help on this would be great. I have spent a fortune on scotlands people.
