Thank you Gillian and Maureen. I agree that your 1871 census looks a very very likely candidate.

nothing yet Jenny - I'll keep looking but probably tomorrow now! It's always worth trying wildcard names as it could easily have been mistranscribed. Take a look on the Familysearch site, you will find the baptism for Mary Ann Jelley (Rudgwick Sussex) and if you then type in parents names with surname and doubl;e click on batch number you will get all her siblings.
Will keep looking for you!

Thank you again Christina. Final challenge. Can you find Mary Ann and Joseph on the 1871 census? I have been looking since four o'clock and I can't find her.

Sorry Jenny misread what you wanted - complete accident really - some had put an alternative name (well 2 actually) on the Ancestry site so I did some checking. Have just found the marriage for Peter Doody and Mary Ann Jelley on Ancestry - it was 28th July 1873 Peter was a photographer and his father was also Peter (a tailor), Mary Ann a spinster and her fathers name was William but recorded as deceased.

Sorry Christina but what I meant was how did you first search when you did not know he was a Doody.

1881 census
To find Joseph and his mother with Charles Poat type in
Marian Doody born 1846 Rudgwick Sussex that should get you to the right person!

Just found baptism for Joseph William JELLEY!! 17th August 1868 St Pancras Old Church Campden - mothers name Mary Ann Jelley - appears she was unmarried when she had Joseph - yet another name!!

Thank you Maureen. You were putting your reply on while I was writing my previous thank you. You are so right because I could not find him on the 1901 census either and of course he was then calling himself Doody. I wish he had made his mind up what he was called!
I am actually helping a friend with all this and she said that she was sure there was something 'odd' about her grandfather.
Christina what did you actually search under to come up with the Doodys so that I know for another time?

Thank you all for your help. That certainly gives me food for thought. I had seen the marriage of Joseph and Elizabeth and son Thomas and thought that there must be some tie up but could not confirm it. However the stepfather link looks very promising. I am so grateful as it would never have occured to me.
When I tell you that I couldn't find Joseph's marriage and the first two children are William Hugh and George I think it speaks for itself.

Take a look at Joseph DOODY on the 1881 census he is with his mother Marian age 35 and also a boarder named Charles Poat aged 27. I rather think your Joseph has taken on a stepfathers name after her remarriage.
Familysearch reveals Joseph William Doody fathers name Peter mothers name Marianne Jolley. You will need to verify marriages for Marianne Jolley/PeterDoody and then Marianne Doody/Charles Poat!!

Jennifer Report 3 Dec 2009 14:36

I am looking for Joseph W Poat on the 1871 and 1881 census to try to establish his parents. I have found him on the 1891 and 1911 census where he is married and has his family. From that he says he was born Limehouse [London] and from his age on those census and when he died I think he was born around 1867 to 1869. I can't find his birth registered but I believe it wasn't compulsory until 1875 so that may not be significant.
Can anyone help me please?
