Yeah, well we were all novices at some time.

As you may know, there's two places to buy an m.cert - the GRO and the local RO that holds the rego. The GRO holds no originals, but the local has the original registrations of Bs and Ds, and rego office marrs and marrs the registrar attended (which pre-1898 was all non-conformist and RC marrs). If you apply to the local RO they might write out a copy or they might give you an image of the original rego, which will have the informant's signature. Not all local ROs issue scans - you'ld have to ask what you'ld get.

Anyway, some local ROs have their indices at least partially online - in NBL, just Newcastle and North Tyneside, I think. With redistricting, some of Tynemouth's regos went to Newcastle (e.g., those for Longbenton), and some went to Northumberland Central in Morpeth. If I get a hit on FreeBMD - e.g.:

Here we can find the marrs in the example - we couldn't for Freake + Patterson, suggesting that rego is now in Morpeth.

There is a parish record for this online - it's a pre-1837 style and doesn't list parents. Go to:

and "Browse our record collection". We want the
Durham Bishops Transcripts - DUR - Tynemouth - image 478 of 696
(This image gives the entry # as 350, and there was only one parish in Tynemouth city at this time, namely Christ Church, so we now know what the N.Tyneside code CC is for.)

Note that here the local RO is indexing by entry #, not by page #, so there's no bother seeing who married whom. Some local RO's identify what church their code stands for in the hit - S.Tyneside has a key on their web site, so we can see that their register CF is for St Hilda's S.Shields, e.g. The local RO organizes their rego's differently from the GRO - they have a seperate rego for each church, and for B/Ds, a seperate rogo for each subdistrict. Although Newcastle looks up church's for you, they don't look up the sub-RDs, and leave it to you to guess that their codes STA=St. Andrew, STN=St. Nicholas, ALS=All Saints, etc. (The codes are on the pdf application form)

The only place I can find this stuff is free bmd, and it took me a long time to work out how to use that lol.

I would guess they're all grandchildren, but I don't actually know - they could be looking after some of Wm's nieces and nephews. It costs money to see the transcriprion, and even more to see the actual census images, and I'm just doing a free search.

So if I enter Freake, and the census ref rg14pn30800, I get those 8 Freakes.
So now I guess something that I can search for, like the occupation of miner, and add that - no hits. Course, Wm could still be a miner, and have his occup down as pitman or collier or coal hewer, etc., and I'ld get no hits.

Now another guess pob=Seaton - 6 hits (for all the kids). Next try expanding this to Seaton Delaval - no hits, so try Seaton Sluice - 6 hits, so we know pob for kids. BUT this does depend on making good guesses.

I've found births on FreeBmd of an Ethel Hannah Freake, Dec 1903..

And an Esther Freake Sept 1908.
All tynemouth, so I'll have to try to see what my dad might know or be willing to tell me.
His dad ( Thomas William ) died in 1955 when my dad was just 11 years old so he's not very forthcoming with family history.

You obviously have the right person in the Brown line, as my great grandfather is William Freak ( spelling changed over the years ).

Do I take it that all the children belong to Elizabeth J and William?
I had Thomas ( my dads dad ) and john, but didn't know about other kids as my dad doesn't talk about this stuff, which is why it's so hard sometimes.

I seem to have lost a book full of info and can't search again as I no longer have access to Ancestry.
I mailed one of my hotmatches today and it looks like I have a wrong marriage in my tree.

I have an Elizabeth Ann Smith born 1844, married to a William Holgeth in Boston Lincs 1862, she had 2 children, Charles born 1867 and Anna born 1869, then she married a Robert Patterson in 1872 in Tynemouth and had 2 children, Elizabeth Jane born 1874 and John R born 1876.
I think I then found her on the 1881 cencus as being a widow and the 1901 census as being married to a Thomas Gibbon born 1836 in Durham.
They guy I mail has Thomas Gibbon married to a Catherine Fletcher, but I can't find anything else out.

If anyone can help I'd appreciate it greatly.
