Barry - this does seem a real possibility. It is clear that he left his wife as she is to be found with a relative in 1891 with 2 children (though I have found no trace of their births). Her eldest child is not with her. In 1901/1911 she has reverted to her maiden name of FAIREY, though she declared she was a widow with 2 children of the marriage, both living. These numbers have been crossed through with red ink. |

Dear Quinsgran - I did look at this marriage as a possibility but our Thomas was still in Birmingham then. He was in prison from December 1873 until mid 1875. I know this marriage is earlier but this was not his first offence and he was also a bit young at 15 for this to be him. |

Perhaps Thomas and Sarah pretended to be married? |

I've added an update as I've just realised that our Thomas couldn't have married Sarah YORK (FreeBMD) as he was behind bars at the time! |

Crumbs, Quinsgran, that's a thought. We also have other ELLIS people living in Military Road but I can't remember the years. |

The only reason I think it was wrong is because it is the 1881 census and Thomas and Harriett are living in lodgings. So the prisoner cannot be the right one. |

Are you sure the prisoner is the wrong man? |

Yes, that's him in 1881. He married the other lodger, Harriet. |

I have just been looking at Thomas's notes and realised that he was in prison in December 1873 (he got 18 months hard labour) so would not have been released until mid 1875 so I doubt if he is the one married to Sarah. |
