Hi all. Am trying to find birth/baptism records for my G x 3 grandparents. He was William Williamson, born c1802 in Newport or New Village, Yorkshire. She was born Rebecca Clough c1794 in Blacktoft, Yorkshire. I've tried all the usual places but hit a brick wall.
Thankyou in advance

Hello to one Christine from another! Where did you find these birthplaces? Are they on a later census where we can have a look and make any suggestions?

Hello Christine! Yes I have all the census stuff, dont know how to put it on here though! So...1841 living in River Side, newport-William is a brick maker. 1851 in Gilberdyke gives his place of birth as Newport, and age 48, hers says Blacktoft age 58. 1861 they both say they were born in New Village, he's 60, she's 69. From their ages on their death certs he was born in1802/1803 and she was born in 1793/1794. Hope this helps?

Am heading off to my other computer so I can access my ancestry stuff right now! Back with you asap.

You have 2 computers? Wow - now I'm impressed!

Aveyronnaise Report 10 Nov 2009 16:24

Sadly, having two computers doesn't make me twice as efficient at finding lost relatives! I have had a look at the igi and Google maps and geographically the nearest match for William is this:

05 OCT 1802 Independent, Swanland, Yorkshire, England

Not much help with his father's name though, as it says Samuel OR William Williamson! Mother's name Elizabeth. I will have another look and see if I can find a possible marriage for your William and Rebecca.

Aveyronnaise Report 10 Nov 2009 16:26

But I've got a marriage!

1. REBECCA CLOUGH - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: Female Marriage: 25 OCT 1827 Eastrington, Yorkshire, England

Husband's name William Williamson. Eastrington is just next door to Gilberdyke.

Just realised you probably had that already!

Chrissy Report 10 Nov 2009 16:27

I have the marriage [I think] 25 Oct 1827 at Eastrington. It's the only marriage between a William Williamson and a Rebecca so I've assumed thats its them. Probably wrong.

Can't see anything approaching Rebecca on the baptisms, I'm afraid. By the way, did they have children? My Yorkshire relatives (which number into the thousands) had a very useful habit of giving at least one of their children the mother's maiden name as a middle name. You might get some confirmation of "Clough" that way. Have to pop out for an hour or two now but will come back to this later this evening. Good luck.

No, I couldn't either. I appreciate you looking though. Thanks for your time.

Sorry - I just edited my last post whilst you were writing yours. Do have a look - it might give you another lead.

Thanks Chris, They had 4 children that I can trace, 2 sets of twins according to the 1841 census! Sarah and Thomas in 1831 and John and Joseph in 1836. I'll check out the IGI and see if they're listed. Have to cook tea now for my aged mother but will be back tomorrow morning. Thanks for your help

This is the 1841 census for the family:
William Williams 35
Rebecca Williams 45
Thomas Williams 10
John Williams 5
Joseph Williams 5
Sarah Williams 10
George Clough 15
Look at the last name - too young to be Rebecca's brother, most likely (given the difference in age between her and William) a son from a previous marriage/relationship. Let's try chasing him up!

Yep - here we go, from igi baptisms:

09 OCT 1821 Wesleyan, Newport By Howden, Yorkshire, England
Father WILLIAM CLOUGH
Mother: REBECCA

Which explains why you can't find a baptism for Rebecca CLOUGH. So next step, a first marriage for her.

Aveyronnaise Report 10 Nov 2009 20:54

Here we have it:

William Clough
Event(s)
Birth: 14 Oct 1791 Lancaster, , England
Death: 1823

Marriage(s)
Spouse: Rebecca Carside
Marriage: 17 Feb 1812
Estrington, , England

Someone else has done a lot of research on this family on igi - but be careful; don't take all they say for granted. Some of the information available online for my husband's family is nothing short of fantasy!

Aveyronnaise Report 10 Nov 2009 20:58

No baptism for Rebecca as such, just a pedigree research file that notes:

Birth: 1793

Newport, Yorkshire, England
Death: 25 Feb 1874

These records are worth investigating as they suggest that George was not Rebecca's only child from the first marriage:

8. RICHARD CLOUGH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 04 JUN 1816 Eastrington, Yorkshire, England

9. WILLIAM CLOUGH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 05 MAR 1819 Eastrington, Yorkshire, England

10. ROBERT CLOUGH - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 24 MAR 1814 Eastrington, Yorkshire, England

And these matches come up for William Williamson and Rebecca:

60. JOHN WILLIAMSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 13 JAN 1833 Eastrington, Yorkshire, England

61. CHARLES WILLIAMSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 23 JUL 1826 Eastrington, Yorkshire, England

62. SARAH WILLIAMSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 30 MAY 1830 Eastrington, Yorkshire, England

At least one of these pre-dates the marriage we have for them though. And finally, you shouldn't assume that there were two sets of twins - on the earliest census returns ages were rounded to nearest 5 years after the age of 15 (I think it was 15, anyway!)

Have fun from here on in! Chris xx
