Not too fussed aboutthe ages as in 1871 it says Eliza was 34 but born in 1837 - poss mistranscribed???

Marina

Marina Report 6 Nov 2009 17:06

Not too concerned about the age as it also gives year of birth as 1837 in 1871 which would put Eliza at 44

Astra
I am liking the census return in 1871 - My Richard would have been 15 years old here and on the 1861 Census there was a john Smith who was 6 ..... def worth me investigating further

You could be correct Rootgatherer but as you well know the details on the census have been known to be a distant relative to the truth!

Marina. On the 1891 I note that Richard is living with his Aunt Hannah in Cumbria and is a widower. So Hannah must be William's sister as she is noted as single. Might be a handle to latch onto. Is Richard your direct ancestor?

if Eliza was of full age (ie over 21) on her wedding certificate it means she would have been at least 27 in the 1861 census, so unless she was lying on one or the other it is possible that the one i you have found is not the right Eliza

The trail for Eliza and children seems to have disappeared until her son Richard appears again in 1891 whereby he is with his kids in Cumbria - so 1871 and 1881 are a mystery

Marina

Marina Report 6 Nov 2009 15:57

Maybe the Isle of Man being misheard is a possibility....

Have looked for Eliza Smith in 1871 and 1881 and although there are a couple with birth parishes noted as Ireland the rest of the family don't match

rootgatherer Report 6 Nov 2009 15:53

Do you have any of the family in 1871 please?

Eliza's birthplace on a later census may help - either giving a county in Ireland or showing that she had actually said Isle of Man!

Jacky Report 6 Nov 2009 15:45

maybe the person doing the census was a bit deaf or miss herd her & thought she said ireland instead of isle of man ???

have you found her on census after 1861 what does that say ???

Marina

Marina Report 6 Nov 2009 15:43

Hi Rootgatherer
Yes it is the one I have found - after this my trail for Eliza goes cold
I have searched for Eliza on previous census and they all lead me to Isle of Man but on this census it indicates her irth place as Ireland so I am really off on a goose chase

Hi Potty
William's occupation on the marriage cert was a labourer and have only found Eliza on the 1861 census with three children - one of which being a Richard Smith - place and year of birth for him match my other records for him.

Potty

Potty Report 6 Nov 2009 15:09

Have you found Eliza with the child who is your gt gt grandparent on any census?

Potty

Potty Report 6 Nov 2009 15:06

What was William's occupation on the marriage cert?

Marina

Marina Report 6 Nov 2009 14:41

My great great great grandmother Eliza Quayle has brought me to a brick wall. She married a William Smith in 1854 and ages are given only as FULL (I understand this to be legally old enough to marry)
Her father was a John Quayle who was a labourer and William Smith's father was a Richard Smith who was a blacksmith. (Marriage was in Liverpool and witnessed by a David Quayle and Catherine - looks like - Sleaver???). Found an Eliza SMITH on 1861 census and states her age as 26, a stokers wife and being born in Ireland - no sign of William though. My searches haven't been too great on earlier census searches although Quyale is a popular surname in Isle of Man - where am I going wrong and how and where do I begin my Irish research? Any pointers and tips?
Thanks all
