Maybe she moved out of the area in 1871 to be a servant to someone . She was aged 16 app at the time .
I did look up on "familysearch" and she's not there .

I have the same problem as you ..I cannae find my great grandmother in 1881... she moved away from Shropshire where she was born and ended up in Blackburn married in 1888 !!! ... took me 3 yrs to find her .
I hope you do find her in 1871 .
Gala.

Gala,

Thankyou,

She was quite notorious , I have several newspaper cuttings re her court appearances .She was given 3 mths hard labour in 1898..

I wonder if she was in prison in 1871.

She could,nt read or write , so the census taker could have written any name down.,She was always adamant abt being bn in Whitby ,though she only lived there as a baby.

Ah ! now then she could have been and maybe she had her child from an inmate or whatever . So is there nothing in the papers during 1871 as you have ? just helping you to look for clues ...I love looking for clues !! ;-). LOL.

No nothing in papers. I looked up criminal records 0n Ancestry, but they only go as far as 1892 and her court appearances are btwn 1893 and 1898.

She stole ............£5000 in money and bonds from a cash box and told the court
" I spent 15shillings of it in drink ,and was too drunk to remember where I hid the rest of it."

She is my favourite character. I really want to find her in 1871 ,it may give me a clue to the father of her illigitimate child.

I did however find her future husband Wlm in the criminal recotrds 1872 3 months imprisonment for theft Suffolk 1872..

don't think it's the 1857 birth for Hannah Mary, unless she was a twin. It looks like Thomas Estil Wood born in the same quarter.
