Ho Jonesey.
I went onto www.gro.gov.uk and it specified that I needed an exact date of the marriage - I know the 'quarter; and year, so how do I get around this?
Thanks,
Nadine

Thank you to you all for your advice and search results. I've followed up on them all, but, I guess the only way I'll know for sure is to find Horace's father's name - which seems will be the deciding factor. Unfortunately, without an exact date of birth or exact date of marriage - I cannot even order a birth/marriage certificate. I will try a few more resources but fear I may have to close this one.
If I do have any luck/success - I'll let you know.
Thanks again.

I also live in Australia, I have access to the 1911 census, can do basic searches for free. If I need further information, like everyone else I have to pay for the information.

You can go through this site.

Hi Nadine,

I will go to sheffield registry office later this week and get Evelyn's and Horace's marriage cert as i need to go and get Francis Donley's birth cert.

The marriage cert should show fathers name and such, do you want me to do this, i will pay as you have posted the card to Abi and it is your birthday on Saturday.

Dea, i bet your fed up of the name Francis Donley.

If the death reg in 1992 with the DOB as 11/11/1898 is correct then one of this is most likely to be his birth reg;

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Dec 1898 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lee Horace Grimsby 7a 636 (Lincs & Humberside)
Lee Horace Albert Farnham 2a 134

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Mar 1899 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lee Horace Dewsbury 9b 576 (Thornhill is covered under this district)
Lee Horace Chesterfield 7b 679
Lee Horace Edward St. Olave 1d 211
Lee Horace Norman Croydon 2a 284

There isn't a middle intial when he marries Evelyn so presumably we can rule 3 out so just leaving the other 3.

Unfortunately, I have no records/certifcates at all ... I have lived in Australia for over 20 years and have started to research my family history. I know Horace was married to Evelyn Holland c.1922 and he died in 1992. I'm a direct descendant through my father (Barry) who was Horace and Evelyn's son. I really don't have a lot to go on.
Thanks.

Nadine, have a horrible feeling I'm repeating research, but here goes:

1901 England Census

Name: Horace Lee
Age: 8
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Charles
Mother's Name: Martha
Gender: Male
Where born: Eastwood, Yorkshire, England

Civil parish: Rotherham
Ecclesiastical parish: Eastwood St Stephen
County/Island: Yorkshire

Registration district: Rotherham
Sub-registration district: South East Rotherham

Name Age
Charles Lee 37
Martha Lee 36
Charles Lee 16
Edith Lee 13
William Lee 10
Horace Lee 8
Thomas Lee 6
John Lee 3
Edward Lee 5 months

I know a lot is wrong - birth year and mother's name - but I am wondering how you have this info anyway.

I presume you have the marriage cert for Horace, if so what was his father's occupation?

Thanks.
I followed up the leads on my other thread and came up against a brick wall (again!). I'm in Australia and don't have access to the 1911 census.
I'm quickly losing hope and this is my last attempt at finding any info .... I can't even order a birth certificate without more info. I'm quite happy to 'pay' for any certificates, etc that will give me more info to work on but struggling to find the missing link I need.
Thanks,

You can search 1911 census yourself without paying to see information. Just put in the details of your Horace or his siblings and see what comes up. There are also some tips on the boards how to get lots of 1911 census info for free. Good luck Irene

Nadine Report 27 Oct 2009 07:18

Can anyone with 1911 census access please help me? I'm trying to find any information on Horace Lee, born 11th November 1898 (after many futile attempts to locate him in the 1901 census, I'm beginning to think the year may not be correct - but would only be a year either side out I should think ). Believed to have been born in Thorne (sp?) Yorkshire. His father 'Chas' is said to have worked in Chesterfield before moving to Rotherham - so Horace could have been born in Thorne, Chesterfield or Rotherham, I guess. His mother's name was Eliza and he had a brother 'Chas', and sisters Hilda and Annie. I am completely stumped and if anyone can find him in the 1911 census with veryfying information on his parents and siblings, I'd at least have some more information to work with. Not much info, I know, but it's all I've got and I don't know what else to do! Many thanks.
